Tom Cruise in Top Gun

A sequel to Top Gun has been whispered about for years now, with nothing ever coming of it. After the death of original director Tony Scott, the project was put on the shelf. But according to star Tom Cruise, that’s all about to change.

Cruise recently said that Top Gun 2, now over 30 years since after first movie’s release, is in fact happening. Not only that but he, believe it or not, expects it to begin filming within a year. Now comes news that might support Cruise’s words. It’s being reported that Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in Oblivion, is the frontrunner to helm the sequel.

The report says that no official offer has been made to Kosinski at this time, and Paramount had no comment, but sources expect an offer is coming soon. Cruise met with potential directors before and during filming on Mission: Impossible 6, and despite having worked with Kosinski on Oblivion it was the director’s vision for Top Gun 2 that boosted him to the top of the list.

According to producer David Ellison of Skydance Pictures, the follow-up is described as:

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

That, however, was a couple of years back and it’s not clear how similar the currently story is or if Kosinski’s vision for the project changes things up at all.

In addition to Oblivion, the only other released feature Kosinski directed is TRON: Legacy. His latest project, a firefighter drama starring Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Josh Brolin, Taylor Kitsch, Jeff Bridges, and Andie MacDowell titled Granite Mountain, has been completed and is scheduled for release later this year on October 20th.
