Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most prolific actors to date, with three Academy Award wins under his belt, plus a couple more nominations. It’s hard to believe that the actor would ever think about retirement.

However, that seems to be the case. In an official statement from his spokeswoman, Day-Lewis “will no longer be working as an actor.” More on the story below.

Leslee Dart, a spokeswoman for Day-Lewis, did not give any reason as to why the actor is retiring and only sent out this statement to Variety:

“Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject.”

Day-Lewis won three Academy Awards for his performances in My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012), and earned nominations for his work in In the Name of the Father (1993), and Gangs of New York (2002).

The actor’s final performance sees him reuniting with his There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson for an untitled drama that is set in the world of high fashion. According to the report, Day-Lewis also plans to promote the movie. Though, I suspect that the press will hound the actor for a reason why he’s retiring. And of course, that won’t stop anyone from speculating why he’ll stop.

Never sticking to one single genre, Lewis has been a part of historical pieces, musicals, and adventure films. He’s played a number of characters ranging from writers, gangsters, oil tycoons, and real-life President Lincoln. His filmography shows just how selective the actor is when it comes to choosing roles. And the number of years in between each film shows that he’s only interested in the best. In fact, he is known for his method acting, where he would listen to Eminem to channel his character’s rage in Gangs of New York, learned how to build canoes during The Last of the Mohicans, or confined himself to a wheelchair to play his character, who had cerebral palsy, in My Left Foot.

Whatever the reason is for his retirement should not be disclosed. But one thing is for sure, we will never see another actor who is as deeply committed to the craft of acting as Daniel Day-Lewis.
