Zack Snyder’s Creative Influence In DCEU To Be Significantly Reduced

Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder and his wife, producer Deborah Snyder, have been a part of the DCEU creative force since the very beginning. In fact, Zack Snyder has been a major presence having directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, some of Suicide Squad, and was an executive producer and/or writer for Wonder Woman and Aquaman. But it appears that the filmmaker’s creative input could be minimized significantly as the DCEU moves forward.

According to new reports, the Snyders “will no longer have anything like the level of creative influence that got the franchise to this point.” More on the story below.

Sources tell Mashable that both Deborah and Zack Snyder will take a significantly smaller role with the franchise superhero movie universe moving forward. While Warner Bros is denying the story, recent events seem to suggest that the Snyders’ efforts may be phased out.

Though their roles in future DCEU films remains to be seen, the two will still receive a directing and production credit on Justice League. And since they’ve had a creative influence on the DCEU, it’s very likely that they will get a producing credit, at best, for any future films like Aquaman, Suicide Squad 2, and The Flash: Flashpoint. But the report adds that their involvement will be kept “at a distance.” The plan is to figure out their next move for WB films that do not include the DCEU.

A few months ago, Zack Snyder stepped down as director of Justice League to address a family tragedy. He was eventually replaced by Joss Whedon, who would oversee the reshoots. Recently, reports of those reshoots costing up to $25 million have surfaced. Not only that, but they have been causing a few problems for the cast as well, which includes having to digitally remove Henry Cavill’s mustache because Paramount won’t allow him to shave it off for his role in Mission: Impossible 6.

Seeing as how Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad all failed to live up to critical and commercial expectations, WB shifting a majority of the responsibility to Whedon doesn’t come as a huge surprise. One has to wonder how much of the new trailer for Justice League is Whedon’s work, and if that reported $25 million will fix some of the issues that the film reportedly has. Reports say that a lot of Snyder’s action sequences are usable, but Whedon is fixing the dialogue. In fact, DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns calls Whedon his secret weapon.

The same can be said for director Patty Jenkins, whose Wonder Woman was able to save the DCEU singlehandedly. And depending on the success of their films, the same offer could be extended to James Wan (Aquaman) and Matt Reeves (The Batman). If that happens, it would create some sort of brain trust, which is something that has been missing since the beginning of the DCEU. Though, Suicide Squad director David Ayers might not return, especially after what he alluded to at the Bright panel at SDCC this past weekend, saying that his new film wasn’t “some bullshit, produced PG-13 shit movie, I was able to do my thing.” — Suicide Squad was PG-13 and he reportedly felt held back making it.

There’s no doubt Snyder has his fans who are loyal to the dark and grim world of the DCEU that he has created. But let’s not forget, Wonder Woman is a bigger success, commercially and critically, than any one of his DCEU films. So it should be interesting to see how the DCEU will move forward if the Snyders are phased out of the franchise that they helped build.
