Ash vs Evil Dead S2 Blu-ray review

Ash vs Evil Dead
Season 2 Blu-Ray | DVD
Starring Bruce Campbell, Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo, Lucy Lawless, Ted Raimi
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: August 22, 2017

Ash vs Evil Dead will be entering its third season on the Starz network after debuting on Halloween, 2015. Last season, in its second year, the show avoided a sophomore slump by hitting the gas pedal hard on everything Evil Dead fans have come to expect: gore, one-liners, crazy chainsaw action, and”¦ did I say… gore! You can get ready for Season 3 by picking up Season 2 on Blu Ray when it hits stores on Tuesday, August 22nd.

Season 2 reunites Ash (Bruce Campbell) with his sidekicks, Kelly Maxwell (Dana DeLorenzo) and Pablo Simon Bolivar (Ray Santiago), with them seemingly living the happy life in Jacksonville, Florida. That of course is short-lived and by the end of Episode 1 there is gore galore as our characters are showered in gallons of blood, and deadite carcasses are strewn everywhere. Ash is forced to confront the evils of the Book head on by returning home to Elk’s Grove, Michigan, where the events of the classic 1980s Evil Dead horror films took place. There they encounter once more Ruby (Lucy Lawless), who’s now on their side; the big baddie of the season, Baal (Jeff Tobeck), and some blasts from Ash’s past, including his father Brock Williams, played by the legendary Lee Majors.

The Blu-ray Edition presents the blood-splattering world of Ash vs Evil Dead in beautiful 1080p high definition and pulse-pounding Dolby sound. What should draw the fans in though are the special features, of which there are plenty. Several episodes come complete with audio commentary with the cast and crew. I watched Episode 209, “Home Again,” featuring commentary from Campbell, Lawless, Santiago, and DeLorenzo, as well as episode director Rick Jacobson and executive producer Rob Tapert. With a cast as full of personality as this one, you’ll want to watch and listen to all the commentaries. Aside from that, check out the other special features listed below:

Special Features

Season 2 First Look – A basic preview of the season, sans spoilers to let the fans catching up what they’re in for.

Inside the World of Ash vs Evil Dead – Episode by episode look behind the scenes at the memorable scenes”¦ i.e., in Episode 202 “The Morgue,” we see the effects and props used in the infamous “up the butt” scene. These short videos are less than 2 minutes each and feature interviews with the cast and crew, including executive producer Rob Tapert.

Up Your Ash – A short, but in depth analysis of “The Morgue” episode where Ash fights the colon monster and goes up the butt. Interviews with the effects team and members of the production crew. When they debuted this episode at New York Comic-Con last October, the man next to me wretched, then nearly passed out onto me. I was hysterically laughing.

Women Who Kick Ash – Of course focusing on the female cast members, we hear from Dana DeLorenzo, Lucy Lawless, and Michelle Hurd about their roles in the Evil Dead universe. DeLorenzo discusses her character becoming more of a leader in the fight against the deadites.

Puppets Are Cute – A short look at Ashy Slashy, the puppet who haunts Ash and the cast at the asylum. There’s a great shot of Dana DeLorenzo fighting with the puppet while the puppeteer rolls on the floor next to her.

Dawn of the Spawn – Another short, but really interesting peek behind the scenes at how they dressed and created Ruby’s demon spawn. They hired actors with contortionist backgrounds capable of doing the strange movements.

Bringing Henrietta Back – Ted Raimi returns as the hideous deadite from the original Evil Dead 2. The production crew built a massive Henrietta neck puppet for Ash to fight. You can tell the gang working on this was happy since they were bringing back a classic part of the films that fans love.

The Delta – A 2-minute tribute to the forgotten member of the Evil Dead family, the 1973 Delta 88 Oldsmobile. Appearing in every film/show Sam Raimi has ever done, they actually have the same car that Sam, Bruce, Rob, and Ted remember from the 1970s. It’s so enjoyable watching these guys, friends for nearly their entire lives, share anecdotes about the car that bonds them together.

How to Kill a Deadite – A behind the scenes look at gorier scenes from Season 2, as Roger Murray, from the effects team, shares what goes into “killing” the deadites, the prosthetics, dummies, blood tubes, etc. The cast run down the various weapons used to do the bloody deeds.

Fatality Mash Up – Exactly what it sounds like, a quick cut of the goriest scenes, brutal decapitations, and nastiest projectile liquids.

If you loved Season 2, and need to prep and refresh yourself with a fresh coat of blood, sit back and watch the episodes and then enjoy the special features and the commentaries. Fans of the series, the characters, the films, and the universe in general should love and appreciate it. What makes it really special is how much fun it truly seems the cast and crew are having putting this utterly ridiculous stuff on screen. Starz has not yet released a start date for Season 3, but it’s done filming and will be returning soon. Ash vs Evil Dead Season 2 is out on Blu-ray and DVD on August 15th, in stores everywhere. Also be sure to download the Starz App and watch episodes on the go.
