Lots of tentacles and creepy storylines are a big win in my book. Jenny Finn #1 delivers both with a healthy heap of mystery added for the hell of it. If anything, this particular Dark Horse comic book has an even heavier Lovecraftian feel to it than most of Mike Mignola‘s works.

The enigma that is the title character, Jenny Finn, appears at first to be a secondary story in this particular issue. The topic on the lips of everyone in this tale is all about the serial killer on the loose in Victorian England. Until Jenny Finn passes by, that is. Then, in hushed voices, they speak of the girl who may not be completely human. Rumors and stories talk of how her generosity and help may be a double-edged sword.

The reaction from the locals intrigues another person, Joe, who decides to follow her. This decision has consequences, however. As events unfold, he finds himself deeper and deeper in a predicament that may not have a happy ending.

Between the setting and the vernacular, this tale is riveting for any reader. Just be sure that blood and gore are acceptable because this comic has it in spades. A spectacular story with a stellar cast, I am excited to watch this story unfold. Please join me as we watch Jenny Finn change the face (and bodies) of comics.

London’s dockside is threatened by the twin terrors of a plague that leaves bodies covered in tentacles and a slasher killing women in the night, all of which began after the arrival of a strange young girl who is followed by whispers of doom wherever she goes.

* Mike Mignola and Troy Nixey’s acclaimed series!

* Colored for the first time by nine-time Eisner Award-winner Dave Stewart!
