Ready Player One

Warner Bros. has released the latest trailer for Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Ready Player One, Ernest Cline’s novel about a world where humans escape to the virtual world called The Oasis, where all their dreams can be a reality. The first trailer only scratched the surface of the film’s setting and what awaits players when they enter The Oasis. But it showed that it was chock full of pop culture artifacts and icons like The Iron Giant and the DeLorean from Back To The Future.

Now this newest trailer provides a bit more context and the plot. At stake, half a trillion dollars plus full control of the Oasis to the player who can find the creator’s Easter Egg that has been hidden in this vast land. So as you can imagine, players and corporate tycoons will literally jump at the chance to find that Easter egg, and kill anyone who gets in their way. Check out the latest trailer for the film below.

The trailer opens with some narration provided by our lead protagonist Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), a person who has accepted the circumstances bequeathed to him and lives a rather uneventful life. So he escapes to the one place where he feels he has any meaning, The Oasis. A virtual world, created by James Halliday (Mark Rylance), that can only be accessed by players using visors and haptic technology such as gloves. But upon Halliday’s death, the world learns that he had left an Easter egg inside OASIS, and the first person to find it will inherit his entire fortune and the corporation.

So we get a small tease of how the players interact with other avatars and the environment in Oasis, and how the technology itself functions. Halliday, himself, was quite obsessed with pop culture, which is why we see so many nods and references to things like The Iron Giant and Back To The Future. So it should be interesting to see how many of those Easter Eggs (no not the one Wade is looking for) will make it into the film. This time we get to see Gundams, Chucky, and King Kong.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.

The film also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, and Hannah John-Kamen. Ernest Cline, Zak Penn, and Eric Eason penned the script, based on Cline’s novel of the same name.

Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 30, 2018.

  1. I think they missed a musical opportunity not putting Rush in the trailer, but maybe they’re trying to pull a broader audience in.
