Though there have been a few screen adaptations of A Wrinkle In Time, Disney’s latest adaptation of the film will be the first of its kind. Directed by Ava DuVernay, the film will be the first $100 million-plus budgeted film to be directed by a woman of color. Not only that, but the film sees a racially diverse cast and a young woman of color as the lead. That is something worthy of acknowledgment, especially in this day and age.
While the film has yet to be released, Disney has dropped their latest behind-the-scenes look that offers us a peek at the creative process of the film and DuVernay’s mission to give audiences a film that will reverberate. Check it out below.
One of the great things to come out of this video, aside from seeing such inclusivity from a diverse cast and crew, is the fact that there are so many practical settings in this film. Yes, there are CG elements woven into it, but seeing all the physical real-world settings definitely adds a bit of tangibility to the world that DuVernay is creating.
But going back to the diverse cast, the inclusivity is something that cannot be ignored, nor should it be. DuVernay has made an effort to be a representation of diversity and inclusivity. And as we will see in the film, there are many people, cast and crew, of different ages, genders, and skin tone. In fact, star Mindy Kaling makes a note of that in the video. “I’ve never been part of a movie where the diversity represented on-camera and off camera is so effortlessly inclusive,” said Kaling. And so far, it looks like it will live up to that.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.
Directed by DuVernay, from a script written by Jennifer Lee, A Wrinkle In Time also stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Storm Reid, Levi Miller, and Deric McCabe with Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine.
A Wrinkle In Time will open in theaters on March 9, 2018.
