Pacific Rim Trailer Header

Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising. The film is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, and sees the world threatened by the towering monsters known as Kaiju once more.

Now it is up to a new team of young Jaeger pilots to take place of the legends that came before them and defend the earth, or else watch it be destroyed. However, based on the trailer, there appears to be a huge twist. Check it out below.

One of my criticisms, and probably a few others as well, is the lack of daylight in the first film. It practically made it difficult to distinguish the Jaegers. However, the sequel solves that problem by having a lot of the action sequences take place where there is daylight. But the first Pacific Rim had some emotional depth that goes far beyond just Jaeger co-pilots trying to get along. Yes, there was mecha vs Kaiju in it, but del Toro’s love for the genre was clear and he wanted to show that there is more to giants fighting each other.

Let’s just hope there is some of that in Pacific Rim Uprising. Based on the trailers that we have seen, it looks like they will be going to explore the “live up to a father’s reputation” themes. Can these pilots become just as legendary as their predecessors? And there appears to be a lot of motivational shouting, which we probably could not get away from anyway.

Directed by Steven S. Deknight, Pacific Rim Uprising stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, and Adria Arjona. Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rinko Kikuchi return to reprise their roles from the first film.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)””who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

Universal Pictures will release Pacific Rim Uprising in theaters on March 23, 2018.
