Alita Battle Angel trailer

With Disney no longer occupying the month of December with a Star Wars movie, studios are now positioning themselves to take the date by shifting their release schedules.

Among the biggest moves comes from 20th Century Fox, who will now be releasing The Predator and Alita: Battle Angel to a later date. Check out the new release dates below.

Per Variety, Fox will be moving the dates for both films. The Predator, which was sitting comfortably in August, will now move a few weeks down to September 14, 2018. We still don’t know much about the film, although it has been rumored that a new hunt will take place in suburbia. The new date was originally for Fox’s The Darkest Minds, but Fox made the swap. It’s not exactly clear why the change was made, but it’s not like it does any harm to either film.

As for Alita: Battle Angel, that film will be making the biggest jump. According to the same report, the film, which was originally set for a July 20, 2018 release, will now be set for a December 21, 2018 release. Based on the new release date alone, it looks like Fox wants to take advantage of the lack of Star Wars. For the past three years, Disney has released a Star Wars film in the month of December, and all three have made some huge numbers at the box office.

However, the competition won’t be as fierce now that Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters this May. This leaves the door wide open for other blockbusters to be released during that time.

The Robert Rodriguez-directed Alita is based on the manga of the same name. Before he came aboard as director, James Cameron set his sights on helming an adaptation of his own. However, that never came through as the success of Avatar locked him up in developing and directing more sequels. Cameron is, however, a producer of the film, seeing how he was attached to the project for the better part of a decade.

Here’s the plot synopsis for Alita: Battle Angel:

Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.

Alita: Battle Angel stars Rosa Salazar in the title role. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley, and Keean Johnson, also star.

The Predator stars Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Jacob Tremblay, Yvonne Strahovski, Alfie Allen, and Thomas Jane. It is directed by Shane Black.
