Kevin Feige Says A ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel On The Way

Marvel Doctor Strange

Marvel Studios has a bit of a habit of announcing sequels before the release of the first film. That being said, it would look like things are in a holding pattern for Doctor Strange. Though the film was a commercial success, it was met with mixed reviews. That being said, the title character is still an important thread in the Marvel Cinematic Universe tapestry. So, of course, Doctor Strange 2 would be in order. And now it looks like one is actually happening. At least, according to Kevin Feige. Check out what he had to say here below.

Feige spoke to Cinema Blend during the Ant-Man and The Wasp press junket when the question about a Doctor Strange sequel came up. Here’s what he told the site:

“Doctor Strange, you know, whenever we do another Strange one, which we will do, it will be a number of years from the first Strange, and yet he’s a very big part of [Avengers:] Infinity War. So it is just a good problem to have when you have too many beloved characters that people want to see more of, whilst keeping to our core belief that we need to keep exploring nuance and keep doing different types of things.”

Indeed, when you have a number of characters to work with, and people are asking when they will see them next, that is the sign of a good character. But then there is one problem that needs to be taken care of.

Minor spoiler alert…

Doctor Strange is dust in the wind. Literally. So now comes the question of how to bring him back. While we’ve been told that the deaths are permanent, many other characters are turning to end their tenure or continue with sequels. So it’s just a matter of how that will happen. Remember, Spider-Man is literally far from home – considering he isn’t even on the physical plane anymore.

One of the major criticisms of Doctor Strange was that it felt like a retelling of Iron Man but with mysticism. Like Tony Stark, Stephen Strange was rich and considered to be a brilliant surgeon. However, when a tragic car accident takes his hands away, Strange goes to great lengths to regain what he lost. At the end of his rope, a skeptical Strange goes to India to learn mysticism. There, he discovers he is a quick study and soon becomes the Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.

Benedict Cumberbatch first played the character in the title film, then reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War. Earlier this year, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill revealed their ideas for a sequel where Nightmare would play the primary villain alongside Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor).
