NYCC 2018 Daredevil Cover

The NYCC 2018 panel for Daredevil season 3 – held at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in NYC – featured cast and crew alike. There to discuss the ongoing cinematic journey of Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, and Wilson Fisk were show stars Charlie Cox, Elden Henson, Deborah Ann Woll, Vincent D’Onofrio, Joanne Whalley, Wilson Bethel, and Jay Ali, as well as series showrunner Erik Oleson and Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb. But before getting into the meat of the discussion, Loeb introduced the cast and then announced that Cox was married this past weekend – and his wife was sitting right behind me!

Check out the highlights from the Daredevil panel, along with new footage from Season 3 and details on its new villain, Bullseye, here below.

Top 5 Takeaways from the Daredevil Season 3 Panel

Matt’s journey is far from over – Charlie Cox started out by saying that “In the first season, we’re meeting a man who’s really rock bottom. Then all of the other seasons happened, and so, at the beginning of season three, Matt is at, what I hope, an all-time low. He needs to be healed physically, mentally, and spiritually. And he’s on this journey with Joanne Whalley (who plays Sister Maggie).

This idea led into the first clip of the evening. Matt is lying down on a bed in a convent, with two young boys asking him who he is. “I’m just like you,” Matt responds. The boys then ask what happened to him, to which he says, “life.” Sister Maggie comes in and tells the boys to leave. She then talks to Matt in a disappointed way while dressing his wounds. We discover that she raised him at the convent and knows he’s Daredevil, but we also learn that Matt is now deaf in his right ear. She asks if there’s anyone he can call, to which he replies, “No. There’s no one.”

All characters have important roles – With any show and certainly a complaint with past seasons of other Marvel Netflix series is that some characters get the short end of the stick when it comes to story importance. But for Erik Oleson, the new show runner, this is not the case with season three of Daredevil. “All characters play an important role,” Oleson said. “All of their stories are important. You can’t take away one without the whole thing falling apart. So, for me, one aspect that we see this year that embodies this is the free press.” Woll spoke to this idea by noting that she “feels really adrift, and is holding on to the possibility of Matt being alive because the alternative would be too much to take.” In the opposite way, Foggy is dealing with Matt’s absence by “trying to find himself this season. He’s trying to figure out who he is without Matt,” Henson said.

The audience got their first glimpse of this with a scene between Foggy and Karen. Karen finds Foggy in a deli and tells him that she thinks Matt is still alive. She had seen someone in a black mask. Foggy doesn’t believe it because he thinks that Matt would have reached out to them. Karen doesn’t believe that Foggy believes he’s “gone” because he won’t actually use the word “dead.” But when Foggy says his best friend is “dead,” Karen gets angry and leaves.

The action is important – Action is an important aspect of all Marvel Netflix shows and this season of Daredevil is no different. For Oleson, this meant that the action sequences would need to “have really emotional stakes, be unpredictable, and Matt might even lose a fight. There will be real consequences when that happens. I was lucky enough to join a show with AWESOME action. We top the action of the previous seasons.”

This first clip that showcases what the action will be like shows Matt, dressed in his black costume, hiding in the back seat of a car. Miranda’s lawyer, Ben Donovon (Danny Johnson) from Luke Cage, gets in the car and Matt forces him to tell him why Fisk is giving up the Albanians. He tells Matt it’s because of Vanessa, to get her charges dropped. Then FBI agents show up in the car garage and Matt fights them all.

The next clip that demonstrates how intense the action will be shows Fisk being transferred in an armored vehicle. While on the road, an explosion occurs and the car gets flipped over. A massive gun fight ensues outside, with Fisk trying desperately to free himself of his chains. All of the FBI agents are killed and the men after Fisk try to get in the car, but are then all wiped out by one expertly trained FBI agent (played by Wilson Bethel), who then points his gun at Fisk and tells him not to move.

Antagonists as heroes – D’Onofrio started this conversation by stating that “He [Fisk] notices a thread of disease in a certain person. If he pulls hard enough, he’ll get what he wants – Vanessa. Once he has her, he’ll be defined. But there’s a little gnat that bothers him.”¨ He then slowly turned his head to look at Cox. Adding to this idea, Loeb mentioned that “We don’t call our villains heroes, we call them antagonists. Every antagonist is the hero of his own story. From Fisk’s perspective, he’s the hero, and Matt is the gnat.” Finally, Cox chimed in by noting that “It’s good to be the gnat. To have Vincent back, he just elevates the show so much, and we’re so lucky that he wants to come play with us.

It’s an origin story for Bullseye – “In what is probably the worst kept secret in Marvel history,” Loeb said, “we’re telling an origin story for, well, let’s let Wilson tell the story of what he’s going to become.” As some might note, rumors have been floating around the internet as to whom Bethel would be playing. Well, those rumors turned out to be true. “It has been one of the most rewarding points in my life and career,” Bethel said, “to have been able to tell the story of how Benjamin Poindexter will ultimately become Bullseye.” The crowd cheered wildly at this, as Bullseye is known to be one of Daredevil’s greatest, and most complicated foes. Oleson added that “Bullseye is one of the greatest villains in comics. Period. Telling the story of how a real person teetering on the edge of lightness and darkness could ultimately become an iconic character, and how a person like Wilson Fisk could turn someone who could be a heroic member of society into a villain, is something that we loved toying with. And he does it in a way that feels real, through psychological torment.”

In what fans will surely find to be a very entertaining and tense scene, we see Foggy enter the New York Bulletin office but the lights are out. Dead bodies are everywhere, and hovering over them is Daredevil. Foggy looks shocked. We see a close up of Daredevil – but it’s actually Dex (Bethel) in the costume – as he pulls his batons out of someone’s neck. He turns to see Foggy staring at him in horror, and he throws the baton straight at Foggy’s head from across the room. A hand reaches across Foggy’s face and catches the weapon just as it’s about to crush Foggy’s skull. Foggy stares at Matt, dressed in his black costume, even more shocked than before, and then runs into a nearby room. In the room we see Karen pointing at the door, with her boss and another lady in the background. Back to the main office room, Matt asks, “Who are you?” To which Dex responds, “I’m Daredevil.” The two men then begin a brutal fight, with Matt getting the upper hand; however, once distance is put between them, Bullseye lives up to his name, and eventually, the scene ends with Bullseye, dressed as Daredevil, knocking Matt out and standing over his unconscious body.

Daredevil Season 3 launches on Netflix on October 19, 2018.

Missing for months, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) reemerges a broken man, putting into question his future as both vigilante Daredevil and lawyer Matthew Murdock. But when his archenemy Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is released from prison, Matt must choose between hiding from the world, or embracing his destiny as a hero.
