Day 4 of New York Comic-Con started in a way I could not have imagined: with me leaping off a crane hundreds of floors up above a raging inferno below. Or at least that’s what it seemed like during the Skyscraper: The Impossible Leap experience. Located in the 100s row of the NYCC show floor, Skyscraper‘s VR experience allowed fans to mimic Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s epic leap from a crane to an open window of the burning tower The Pearl from the film Skyscraper, which opened early this year on July 13th. The VR experience was available at certain theaters across the country and was exactly what VR should be.
One issue many booths and fan experiences have at Comic-Con is they take a long time and thus build long lines. Skyscraper, I felt was perfectly timed, only a few minutes once the 3D helmet is on. You follow cues on the screen to an elevator that takes you towards the crane platform. You even get a personal call from The Rock’s Will Sawyer, who guides you as to what do to as you move forward. Then you swing those arms”¦ and I mean SWING THOSE ARMS! I was fortunate to benefit from watching the people before me and one kid, around 10 – 12 years old, flailed his arms until he jumped and then you could see him look down”¦ and that was that. You get three tries to make the “Impossible Leap” into the Pearl’s open/shattered window. For someone who is not in peak physical condition, this was tiring and my pulse was definitely up after.
But goddamn was it fun! I always go into VR experiences like hypnosis”¦ thinking this will never affect me. Skyscraper‘s Impossible Leap gives you the “over your head” sensation before you even have to jump, showing an amazingly realistic Hong Kong all around you and way beneath your feet. If you get a chance either at a future Comic-Con event or theater, make sure to give Skyscraper: The Impossible Leap a try.
