Director Christoper McQuarrie To Tackle Back-To-Back ‘Mission: Impossible’ Sequels With Tom Cruise

Last year’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout was on many critics’ top ten lists. And with good reason. The pulse-pounding and heart stopping practical stunt work and thrilling action, all performed by Tom Cruise, has audiences hungry for more. And it looks like Paramount will be giving us just that.

New reports confirm that director Christopher McQuarrie will be back for not one, but two Mission: Impossible films with Cruise that will be shot back-to-back and released in 2021 and 2022. More on the report below.

The news comes to us from Variety, who says shooting back-to-back will capitalize on the franchise’s current popularity. Fallout grossed over $791 million worldwide on a $170 million budget. Quite an impressive haul for a franchise that has been around for 20 years.

Additionally, we can expect to see the first new film in the summer of 2021 and the second in the summer of 2022. The 2021 is also to avoid competing with another Paramount and Cruise project, the Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which is releasing in 2020.

Both McQuarrie and Cruise released statements about their returns to the franchise, with the former making a cheeky tweet and the latter confirming the films’ releases through a video tweet:

Obviously excitement is pretty high for this one, or should I say these two. Just how can the filmmaker and actor raise the bar on practical stunt work in the two new sequels? It’s one thing to scale the world’s tallest building, and it’s another to cling onto the side of a plane as it takes off. Then there’s the fact that Cruise did a HALO jump and hung on the rope that was tethered to a helicopter in midair. Not to mention he learned how to pilot that helicopter. Would it be too much if they go to space and do a major action sequence on the moon?

This will also mark the first time that the franchise has seen a director return three times. The Mission: Impossible has four different directors leading up to Rogue Nation. Since then it’s been McQuarrie taking the franchise to where it is now.

But as to what we could see in these sequels, that is still unclear. Of course, the obligatory death-defying stunts and high-stakes action is a must have, but plot-wise, it remains to be seen how Ethan Hunt will be able to accomplish these new missions without things feeling repetitive. Not that the franchise has repeated itself. But with some of the major arcs coming to a close in Fallout, it will be interesting to see what new organization or terrorist group will rise in the wake of the events of the previous installment.

Also, they need to bring back Ilsa Faust because, well, you know, she just kicks ass. And if they find a way to work in the flute sniper rifle again, then I will give them all my money.

We will keep you posted on all the new developments surrounding Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 as soon as they come in.
