Darkborn

Back in 2016 we found out about the first game from developer The Outsiders, which was co-founded by former Battlefield developers David Goldfarb and Ben Cousins.

At the time, the then untitled game was known as Project Wight. That has now changed, with the announcement that the game’s title will be Darkborn. In it you play as a creature, one of the last in a species that’s being killed off by humans, who’s on a path of bloody revenge.

In addition to announcing the game’s title, a 15-minute gameplay reveal video has also been released. You can find that below.

As we found out when Darkborn was first announced, the game will feature you playing as the creature when it’s smaller and weaker, which involves more stealth; and also as the creature when it’s much bigger and stronger, which is when you’ll really be doing some damage to your enemies. We saw both teased in the announcement video, and we see both in the gameplay video below.

IGN exclusively revealed the title and shared the new gameplay video. They also spoke to Goldfarb, who had this to say about the game:

“Darkborn is first and foremost a game about being a monster. Playing it is about experiencing that monstrous quality – in first person combat, in novel abilities and movement, and even in enemy reactions to you.

But it’s not traditional in that humans are murderous, cruel enemies bent on your extinction. You yourself are an innocent caught up in a much larger conflict between Powers, the specifics of which become clearer in the course of the game. It’s a classic revenge story, but also a mystery: what happened to the world and your people? Can they be saved?”

There were a wide variety of things that inspired the game. One of the biggest for Goldfarb was the 1971 re-telling of part of Beowulf, titled Grendel, by author John Gardner. He spoke more about that inspiration when the game was first announced. King Kong and Bambi were also among the inspirations. Goldfarb says video games like the classic Shadow of the Colossus and the more recent Shadow of Mordor were inspirations as well:

“What if the Orcs [in Shadow of Mordor] were the good guys? What kind of lives did those great beasts [in Shadow of the Colossus] have before you came to murder them?”

When development on the game began around three years ago only about a dozen or so people were part of the Outsiders team working on it. That number has since jumped up to about 25, which is obviously still pretty small. For that reason we still don’t have a release window for Darkborn, which is currently in pre-alpha.

When the game is released it’s coming to PC, with a release on consoles also possible eventually.
