Snowpiercer

San Diego Comic-Con is the perfect place to reveal the first trailer for the TBS adaptation of Snowpiercer, based on Bong Joon-ho‘s 2014 sci-fi film – which happens to be an adaptation of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige.

Snowpiercer is set years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, and centers on the last of humanity, who inhabit a train which has over 1,000 cars and never stops. It stars Hamilton‘s Daveed Diggs as the series protagonist, who will lead his fellow tail car passengers in a revolt against the high-class front car passengers. Check out the trailer below.

TBS’s Snowpiercer has had some major issues getting from development to the small screen. Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles creator Josh Friedman left the show after a publicized dispute with TNT. He was then replaced by Orphan Black‘s Graeme Mason.

Here’s an official plot synopsis:

Set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland, Snowpiercer centers on the remnants of humanity, who inhabit a 1001 car, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. The series will premiere in Spring 2020 on TBS.

Snowpiercer is produced by Tomorrow Studios (a joint venture between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios), along with CJ Entertainment, who produced the original film. The series is executive produced by Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements; showrunner Graeme Manson, who wrote the first episode; director James Hawes; Matthew O’Connor; Scott Derrickson, and the original film’s producers Bong Joon Ho, Miky Lee, Tae-sung Jeong, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi.

Honestly, I am still unclear as to why there was such a rush to get a TV adaptation out there when the film adaptation works so well. That isn’t to say that the film adaptation was perfect or that you shouldn’t watch the TV series, especially since it has a stacked cast including Diggs and Academy Award-winning Jennifer Connelly.

The show also stars Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand, Steven Ogg, Jaylin Fletcher, and Rowan Blanchard.

The only thing that will be in the back of my mind is whether or not the behind-the-scenes problems will have any impact on the overall quality of the show. We just have to cross our fingers and hope that won’t happen.
