Robert Eggers

For two films, Robert Eggers has terrified us with supernatural period pieces in the form of The Witch and The Lighthouse. But it looks like he will be stepping away from that for his next film. But that doesn’t mean he won’t have a stellar cast to work with.

According to new reports, he will be directing The Northman, a grounded revenge story, that will star Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Bill Skarsgård, and reunite him with his Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy and Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe. More on the report below.

THR says SkarsgÃ¥rd was the one who approached Eggers with the initial idea for the story, and will also be a producer. According to them, The Northman is described as a “grounded story set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century that centers on a Nordic prince who seeks revenge for the death of his father.” SkarsgÃ¥rd will play the prince seeking revenge. Kidman will play SkarsgÃ¥rd’s mother, which is a bit strange considering that she played his wife in the HBO drama series Big Little Lies.

In addition to directing, Eggers will write the script alongside Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón. The plot of the film may sound a bit simple and Shakespearian, but let’s face it, maybe something like this will be a nice change of pace for Eggers. But if he were to throw in some supernatural elements, then who am I to complain. But we can expect to hear some period dialogue, which is why the Sjón hiring makes a lot of sense.

Eggers’ films are known for their deliberately slow pacing and extra special attention to staying true to the period dialogue. After watching The Witch, and hearing reactions from The Lighthouse, I am interested in seeing how he will blend that with the grounded story. It also helps to have a great cast.

SkarsgÃ¥rd, best known for his most recent role in Big Little Lies and True Blood, can next be seen in Godzilla vs. Kong. Kidman’s next role is Bombshell, the Jay Roach drama about the sexual assaults that occurred at Fox News. And Taylor-Joy can next be seen in Edgar Wright’s Night At SoHo, and hopefully, if it ever comes out, The New Mutants.

No word yet on when The Northman starts production or when it will be released, but we will keep you up to date on the project should any new developments come in.
