Impossible Sliders

[Impossible sliders laid out on a tray with gluten-free buns, lettuce, tomato, and Impossible Food’s “Americana” sauce made from vegan mayonnaise, Sriracha, ketchup, and caramelized onions.]

CES 2019: Las Vegas, Nevada — We spoke to Impossible Foods COO David Lee. We wanted to know why 2019 was the year for Impossible Foods, which has been selling products for years, to come to the world’s largest technology show.

“CES is always the place to break important, critical, disruptive technology and Impossible Foods was founded with a bold mission to help save the planet one delicious burger at a time — to start. Today we’re serving Impossible Burger 2.0. This is an example of technology that just gets better and better. It has everything you want in a burger — the taste, the texture, the crave-ability. It has all the protein you want, all the iron you want, but it doesn’t have the stuff you don’t want. It doesn’t have cholesterol. It doesn’t have the same amount of fat. It doesn’t have the same amount of calories. What it does is that it allows meat eaters everywhere to prefer our burger — made from plants — versus a burger from a cow.”

Echo Auto, Lifestyle 1

Several months ago, Amazon dropped surprise news about the next generation of their Echo devices.

While the updates to Echo, Echo Plus, and others were expected, the announcement of an Echo device dedicated to the automobile was a surprising addition to the mix. Echo Auto was designed to live in the car, working through the Amazon Alexa app to give the user hands-free functionality for content and entertainment in their cars.

Samsung working with Apple on AirPlay

[As Apple seeks to keep up in the streaming space, AirPlay support will allow more iTunes users to see their content in more places.]

Yesterday, Samsung surprised the technology world with two big announcements during their CES 2019 keynote: (A) Starting in Spring of 2019, Samsung smart TV sets would support Apple’s AirPlay 2 protocol, which allows users of the TV sets who have iPhone, iPad, or Mac devices to stream what they’re seeing on their Apple device over to Samsung smart TV set via Wi-Fi. (B) iTunes is coming to Samsung smart TV sets. Owners of Samsung smart TVs will be able to stream Movies and TV shows they purchased via their Apple ID via an iTunes app on a Samsung device.

Willow Smart Pump

We talk a lot about tech on The Drill Down – gaming tech and smart home tech are the sort of thing we get into regularly. But what about smart mom tech?

Willow is breaking into the smart mom tech movement with their eponymous pump. Unlike most breast pumps, which attach suction cups to nipples and then extract the milk through tubes, the Willow Pump uses a different approach. Last year they showed off a prototype, but this year at CES 2018 they’re back after a beta, with a lot of knowledge, along with new pricing and availability.

DJI has a new gimbal named the Ronin S

DJI Senior Product Manager Paul Pan shows off the Ronin-S at CES 2018.

Las Vegas Convention Center – Nevada. People know DJI for their drones, but at CES 2018, DJI debuted the Ronin-S gimbal. Even though it was in the back, behind the flying apparatuses, the gimbal was one of most, if not the most, popular item there.

Rather than holding a phone steady, this gimbal is focused on keeping your SLR’s footage as smooth as can be while you’re on the move. Control of the device is simplified from other gimbal designs – there’s a thumbstick to control panning and framing shots, and a sport mode that helps stability when you’re on the move.

Drone Defence CES 2018

Drones. They’re EVERYWHERE. At CES 2018 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, you can head over to the drone area of South Hall in Tech East and be awash in the whir of electric quadrocopters. These things have 4K cameras with incredible zoom lenses and can be found in varieties from whisper quiet, all the way to crazy loud.

They’re awesome, but at least one company understands that the runaway, or rather flyaway, technology of the past few years presents some potential security risks.

Toyota Keynote

Toyota is finally connecting with reality. What could be Japan’s most venerable automaker has decided to walk away from their earlier dreams of a hydrogen future. Instead, they’re newly focused on adding battery electric options to their line up of Toyota and Lexus luxury lines.

It sounds like the sort of thing we hear from all sorts of automakers these days – “we’re going electric!” – but make no mistake, this announcement out of CES 2018 is far more significant.
