Last Christmas

Last Christmas
Director: Paul Feig
Writer: Bryony Kimmings, Emma Thompson
Cast: Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding, Emma Thompson, Michelle Yeoh
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Rated PG-13| Minutes: 103
Release Date: November 8, 2019

George Michael‘s “Last Christmas” is an essential track for any Christmas playlist. And though “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, but the very next day you gave it away / This year, to save me from tears, I’ll give it to someone special,” is a bittersweet lyric, it does play a huge role in Paul Feig‘s holiday romantic comedy Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.

The film is breezy, tender, warm, and sweet at best, though it is a bit weighed down by its predictability. Still, looking past its flaws and embracing the cheerful hope it joyfully expresses, Last Christmas can go from essential track on any Christmas playlist to essential watching during the holiday season. Check out my review below.

Pixar's Soul

Pixar has this incredible track record of releasing films that combine great storytelling with outstanding animation. For them, it’s always about the story that takes audiences to worlds they’ve never been to. Films like Inside Out and Coco have done that. And it looks like they have done it again with Soul from director Pete Docter, which stars Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey.

A teaser trailer has arrived today for the film. In it, audiences will be taken to a world where our personality and souls are developed long before we step foot on this earth. And there will be some catchy music to go along with it as globally renowned musician Jon Batiste is writing original jazz music for the film and Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network) are creating an original score. Check out the trailer below.

The Invisible Man Movie

If the Dark Universe is being reborn, I’m glad it’s through Blumhouse Productions. Producer Jason Blum has always prioritized a good story over a simple premise, and now we will get to see what he can do with The Invisible Man from director Leigh Whannell.

The film will see Elisabeth Moss as a wife who escapes from her abusive husband, only to find out that he may be haunting her as an invisible man. Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid, Harriet Dyer, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen also star. Check out the trailer below.

James Dean

On September 30, 1955, tragedy struck when Hollywood star James Dean was killed in a car accident, cutting short his promising young career. At the time he had only appeared in three starring roles, not counting uncredited and television appearances: East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. The latter two of those three titles weren’t even released until after he had passed away. And still, his short time in the spotlight led to two Academy Award nominations—one for East of Eden and one for Giant. Both Oscar nominations came after his death, and his East of Eden nomination was the first posthumous nomination in Academy Awards history.

Now, 64 years after Dean’s untimely death, it’s been announced that the actor will be starring in one of the lead roles in his fourth feature. The film, titled Finding Jack, is described as a “Vietnam era action-drama.”

Marriage Story

Marriage Story
Director: Noah Baumbach
Writer: Noah Baumbach
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Azhy Robertson, Julie Hagerty, Merritt Wever
Distributor: Netflix
Rated R| Minutes: 136
Release Date: November 8, 2019 (Limited Theaters)| December 6, 2019 (Netflix)

Writer and director Noah Baumbach‘s Marriage Story is an emotionally crushing, yet very compassionate depiction of a collapsing marriage between two people and the irony of the realization that they must come together in order for them to go their separate ways. It also may be one of Baumbach’s greatest pieces of work.

Films about divorce rarely explore the heartbreak of two people who could not make it work with such honesty. But with Marriage Story, it feels raw and unnerving. The film moves like a stage play with its characters (played brilliantly by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver) pouring out their souls for all of us to see as they go through one of the most difficult points in their lives.
