This week, a new study showed that female-led films have outperformed male films at the box office, proving that there are audiences who are interested in seeing female characters at the lead. The number of female directors taking the helm of films has increased as well, with many of them going behind the camera for a variety of genres. However, it looks like there are some studios who do not have faith in some female directors.

Zama director Lucrecia Martel, who was among the frontrunners to direct the Black Widow currently being developed, reveals why she turned down Marvel Studios’ long-awaited standalone film. In a new interview, she says she turned down the project because she learned that she would not be overseeing the action scenes. More on the report, below.

Disney’s live-action take on the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella de Vil has a director in sights.

It’s being reported that Craig Gillespie, director of the Academy Award winning I, Tonya and the 2011 Fright Night remake, has entered into negotiations to direct Cruella. The spinoff, which is similar to Disney’s villain-centric Sleeping Beauty spinoff Maleficent, is set to star Oscar winner Emma Stone in the title role.

Fast and Furious Hobbs and Shaw

The Fast and Furious franchise may have its longevity but it’s not without its share of problems. The film has had behind the scenes issues with its cast ranging from a feud between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson to a feud between Johnson and Tyrese. There is even a concern about how the female members of the cast don’t have enough of a role in the films.

However, the latest troubles don’t involve any of the actors. It involves a lawsuit about Hobbs and Shaw, the first Fast and Furious spinoff, and is between Fast and Furious producer Neal Moritz and Universal. The future looks pretty good for Sony’s Spider-Man-less universe. Venom turned out to be a bigger hit than expected, despite critics panning the film. So instead of going back to the drawing board to figure out what to do with these characters, the studio is pushing forward on some already announced titles. Morbius: The Living Vampire and Kraven the Hunter are among the two characters connected to Spider-Man lore who are getting their own films. And now, we are getting a few surprising updates on them.
