Box Office Buzz: ‘Lakeview’ Terrace Earns Top Slot
space
MajorJJH   |

Lakeview TerraceIn a weekend that can only be described as “lackluster,” this week’s box office winner only walks away with the prize because, I feel, no one else really bothered to turn up to the party. Lakeview Terrace came away with the prize this week, which really just explains how bad this week must have been. A movie portraying Samuel L. Jackson as an overbearing cop hassling a pair of newlyweds (that’s all I know of the movie, by the way) should not have beaten out the animated feature Igor, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

With a whopping $15.6 million, Lakeview Terrace came out on top by a pretty clear margin too, considering the next closest entry was last week’s number one, Burn After Reading, which managed only $11.3 million this week. These were the only two movies to rake in over $10 million this weekend.

Number three goes to the Dane Cook/Kate Hudson comedy My Best Friend’s Girl, which managed only $8.3 million. Sadly, it looks as if the box office take seems to match up with its reviews, taking a real hit at RT with 3 out of 10 and 4.8 out of 10 at IMDB.

Close behind My Best Friend’s Girl was Igor, an animated movie out of MGM starring the voices of John Cusack as the title hunchback, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese , and Jennifer Coolidge. Jay Leno and Christian Slater also leant their voices to the cast. Sadly, it managed to come away with only $8 million and poor ratings similar to that of My Best Friend’s Girl. This is a bit disappointing, because it sounds like a movie I would like.

This week’s other newbie (newbie being a film that opens in more than a thousand cinemas) was Ghost Town, starring Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, Tea Leoni , and Kristen Wiig. The movie managed only $5 million and a spot at number 8 on the list.

Old favorites include Righteous Kill at number 5, The Dark Knight still earning money at number 9, and Tropic Thunder, which was dropped out of the top 10 to number 11.

The rest of this year is going to go very slowly for me, as I’m only looking forward to Max Payne in October and Quantum of Solace in November. But we’ll continue with Box Office Buzz as long as Box Office Mojo keeps providing us with the stats to do it.

  1. I thought Igor was a really cute film with a bit of edge. All of the actors did a great job (Steve Buscemi was great as a suicidal rabbit). Also loved the music.
