I’m sure that many of you are already aware of this, but the comic I am writing about today is based upon true events from the eighteenth century. 47 Ronin is more than just a great story, it’s a tale of honor, loyalty, and revenge. As I was not there for the actual events, I cannot attest to the accuracy. But this story has been called a national legend and it’s my pleasure to be able to introduce this comic adaptation to you.

I’ll be honest here, I am going to avoid the use of too many Japanese words as I am likely to inadvertently misspell a few of them. There are many different versions to this story but the main theme remains clear in all of them. And thanks to writer Mike Richardson, we all get to read it! Stan Sakai‘s artwork is distinctive and feels just right for this comic, simple yet refined. Between them, they have given us a wonderful graphic novel filled with action and intrigue.

47 Ronin

The first trailer for Carl Rinsch‘s samurai epic 47 Ronin has finally been released – you can watch it here. Also, four new character posters have been released for the film; you can see them all here below.

After what seemed like endless reports of extended shoots, budget cuts, numerous release date changes, even the rumored report of Rinsch’s termination from the project plagued the film, we now have our first look at the results.

In the film, Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) recruits a banished samurai warrior (Keanu Reeves) to his troupe of 47 other capable warriors who are determined to kill the person who is responsible for killing their master. The film also stars Ko Shibasaki, Hiroyuki Sanada and Rinko Kikuchi.

47 Ronin

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for their long-awaited epic period fantasy 47 Ronin. You can check it out here below.

Keanu Reeves plays a half-breed outcast selected to join a group of ronin (guess how many there are) in the battle against the evil Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano, Thor), the man responsible for killing their master. On their journey of vengeance, they engage in well-choreographed skirmishes and encounter all manner of CGI monstrosities. The predominantly Asian cast includes Japanese actors Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai) and Pacific Rim‘s Rinko Kikuchi as well as recognizable Japanese-American character player Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat). Chris Morgan (the Fast and the Furious movies), and Hossein Amini (Drive) collaborated on the screenplay.

47 Ronin preview banner

Courtesy of the good folks over at Dark Horse, we have some preview pages for Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo) and Mike Richardson‘s (Cut, Caravan) comic adaptation of the greatest revenge story ever told—47 Ronin.

The legend of the 47 Ronin began in the 18th century as a group of samurai who were set on a course of revenge after their daimyo, Asano Naganori was forced to commit ritual suicide after attacking a man knows as Kira Yoshinaka. The tale has been popularized in Japanese culture as a shining example of loyalty, sacrifice, and honor.

With Sakai behind the helm, the comic will unquestionably be grounded in the classic realistic style that has made the comic creator’s work legendary. Check out the preview pages below and get ready for some cold entrees. You know, because revenge is best served… ah, never mind.

47 Ronin

The trouble with unnamed insider sources is that sometimes their information is unreliable. However, when there is trouble on a film set, budgetary issues, and multiple scheduling changes, the information from those insider sources may have some validity.

Last week we reported that those problems took a toll for 47 Ronin, and as a result Universal Pictures forced director Carl Erik Rinsch out of the editing process. But when a studio ousts a director just like that, sometimes it’s best to get the word from the actual person. Reports are now saying that Rinsch is still very much a part of the editing process and has not been fired by Universal.

47 Ronin

Looking at the multiple scheduling shifts that 47 Ronin has undergone, it’s no surprise that Universal Pictures, the studio backing the film, is trying to calm some nerves. The latest move from February 2013 to December 25, 2013 (the film was originally scheduled for November 2012) was done so that some reshoots to focus on Keanu Reeves‘ character could be completed. Now that they have finished, Ronin 47’s troubles have only begun.

According to The Wrap, Ronin 47’s director Carl Erik Rinsch, has been forced out of the editing process, and a studio exec will now be the one to put the finishing touches on the film. Here’s how the site describes the situation.
