Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick, starkly original filmmaker, director of some of the all-time great, most loved and dissected and in a way polarizing cinema, would have been 85 today. Kubrick passed away back on March 7th, 1999.

The essence of Kubrick runs rampant through almost every film maker and film buff who followed his works. American born, but lived overseas in England for most of his life, Kubrick gave a classy sensibility to most of his films, films that were rich in texture, nature, narrative, cinematography, and acting, with a flair and keen sensibility for music placement, or set pieces that were dense and slim in look, almost with a frostbitten clinical approach, which became his calling card and instantly synonymous with the Kubrick name and the Kubrickian legend.

A Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange, the novel penned by the late English author Anthony Burgess, celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. The book, which was rated 65th by the Modern Library on their 100 best English Language novels of the 20th century, deals with a youth experiencing growing pains living in a not too futuristic dystopian society.

The protagonist and antagonist, Alex DeLarge, is a youth gone wild, a madman in the making caught directly in the eye of a world gone anarchistic, where a government and society has splintered moral well-being which is negatively manifested by Alex’s gang, a bunch of rogues who are all disenchanted with their current world and ultimately satisfy their dissensions by their random acts of extreme sex and violence. After he is arrested for a murder, said government uses Alex as their guinea pig for an experiment they are undertaking, which tries to brainwash him to resist his urges for the darkness of his ways. Releasing him back into the world, they realize that it is not so much Alex who needed changing, but the disenfranchised, destroyed society that exists in the world of Burgess’ novel.

Doom Digest

Every day here at Doom HQ we receive tons of tips from our readers about really cool stuff from the world of geek, as well as promotional materials for new films, comic books, collectibles, and much more. While we do our best to bring you as much of it as possible, we don’t always have enough geek manpower available to cover it all on a daily basis. But we hate the idea of all of this really cool stuff wasting away in our inbox. How could we NOT cover it? Hence why we’ve resurrected our long-defunct column Bits Of Doom, now rebranded and revamped as Doom Digest, a collection of easily digestible bits of news, videos, photos, and other goodies.

Today: The novel A Clockwork Orange celebrates its 50th anniversary since publication, Brent Spiner of Star Trek fame plays Spock, a Ghostbusters tour of New York City, Biff from Back To The Future answers some common questions, and a supercut of 50 “Very Special” TV episodes, plus Bits Of Doom.
