Adam Green’s Hatchet series was thought over, the trilogy completed in 2013. Last summer, celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the series Green surprised fans with Victor Crowley, the 4th film in the franchise once again starring horror icon Kane Hodder as the titular monster and Parry Shen as the unlikely hero. The film was released on Blu-Ray/DVD and VOD this week and if you are a fan of this franchise, you will not be disappointed. Victor Crowley retains all the tenets of classic Hatchet; amazing practical effects, spectacular guts and gore kills, and a tongue in cheek sense of humor, with tons of in jokes and references for gorehounds and horror geeks to scream about.

Victor Crowley Hatchet Adam Green

Older horror fans may not know who Adam Green is, but for the better part of the last decade the filmmaker has written and directed some of the very best in slasher horror. Known primarily for his Hatchet series, Green also directed Frozen (2010… not that one), Digging Up The Marrow (2014), and the TV series Holliston on FearNet. In 2006, Green wrote and directed Hatchet, a throwback to ’80s-style guts and gore slashers, starring everyone’s favorite Jason, Kane Hodder as the gigantic unstoppable monster, Victor Crowley. Not only did Green get a horror legend to play his lead villain, but icons Robert Englund (Freddy) and Tony Todd (Candyman) also appeaed. With the sequels, more and more horror legends showed up and soon Green amassed an army of Hatchet fans, both in and out of the industry. This week, the fourth film in the franchise, Victor Crowley, debuts on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, and VOD. I was able to get some time earlier this week to speak with Green about the film as well as its place in horror history…

Victor Crowley Hatchet 4

Back in 2006 director Adam Green made an homage to ’80s slasher horror with Hatchet, in the process creating a new unstoppable monster, Victor Crowley. A combination of Jason Voorhees and Cropsey from The Burning (1981), Crowley is a 7-foot giant with a noticeable scar on his face from the titular weapon who lives and hunts the bayous of New Orleans. He is played by the legendary Kane Hodder, famous for playing Jason in Friday the 13th Parts 7 – 10. Hodder returned to the swamp for Hatchet II (2010) and Hatchet III (2013) and last week in Los Angeles, Green held a surprise screening for the latest installment in the Hatchet franchise, titled Victor Crowley.

Check out the teaser trailer here below from Dark Sky Films for Victor Crowley.

Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th

Every fan of the Friday the 13th slasher series has their favorite Jason Voorhees. For many, myself included, it’s always been Kane Hodder.

A documentary about the man himself is on the way titled To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story. The doc tells Kane’s story, beginning with his difficult earlier years and leading to his landing the iconic role of Jason and other Hollywood roles. It also features interviews with Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), who faced off with Voorhees as Freddy Krueger in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason (though not with Hodder, sadly); Bruce Campbell, who many fans wanted to see join the Freddy and Jason fight in a sequel as Ash from the Evil Dead movies (a battle that did happen in comic book form); Adam Green, who directed Hodder as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet movies after he moved on from the Friday the 13th movies; and more.

Digging up the Marrow Header Image

An effectively creepy new poster has been released for Digging up the Marrow, the upcoming movie from Adam Green, writer and director of Hatchet, Frozen (no, not that one silly), and Hatchet II.

The movie has been on the way for a few years now, but hasn’t received much attention yet, which has been the intention. Green described the movie as an “art documentary” for a while, and despite a release fast approaching very little has been sent out to promote it including no trailer yet, creating a healthy dose of intriguing mystery around it.

What the movie is exactly is a bit tricky to explain, so I’ll let those behind its creation do it! You can check out the cool new poster for Digging up the Marrow, read more about it, AND watch a video of Green talking about the project and how it came to exist below.

Blu-ray Review: Hatchet III – Unrated Director’s Cut

Hatchet IIIHatchet III
Unrated Director’s Cut
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by BJ McDonnell
Starring Danielle Harris, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams
Dark Sky Films
Release Date: August 13, 2013

The latest installment of Adam Green‘s extra-bloody slasher movie saga Hatchet III has arrived in full force on Blu-ray, but unlike the first two movies, Green did not direct this one. He both wrote and produced the new movie, but decided prior to filming to hand directing duties off to newcomer BJ McDonnell – Green’s cinematographer on the first two Hatchet movies. When the original premiered on the film festival circuit in late 2006 and arrived briefly in theaters and on home video a year later, horror fans who had long been swamped by turgid remakes and watered-down PG-13 studio offerings lapped up every drop of crimson grue dripping from its celluloid frames. Though far, far from being a box office success, Hatchet‘s explosive popularity with fans warranted the requisite sequel.

Arriving almost five years later and with little of the fanfare that greeted the original when it debuted, Hatchet II briefly wormed its way into the national mindset once the news broke that it had been pulled from most theater chains due its being released without an MPAA rating. The seemingly manufactured controversy (which reminded me of the mild uproar over homophobic slurs used in Eli Roth’s first Hostel movie that was kept alive on the letters page of Fangoria for a brief period in 2006 mostly through the efforts of the director himself) couldn’t help Hatchet II build a fraction of the cult following earned by its predecessor and overall audience reaction was unimpressive. However, it did well enough for a prospective third movie to get the green light, which brings us to the present day and Hatchet III.
