More than 30 years after Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Rob Tapert created The Evil Dead, the trio came back to work on Ash vs Evil Dead for the Starz network. The series debuted late last year after premiering at New York Comic-Con. Fresh off their appearance at SDCC, and with a little more than a month till its season 2 premiere, the first season is being released on Blu-ray this week. Season 1 saw Ash Williams (Campbell) accidentally conjure the Evil Dead again after reading from the Necronomicon while getting high with a young fluzy. Soon demons and deadites are everywhere and Ash is left to grab his boomstick and rev up the ole chainsaw hand. Joining him in his quest to vanquish evil are his former co-workers and sidekicks Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo). Together the trio was forced to deal with the evils of the book as well as a rogue FBI agent (Jill Marie Jones) and a strange woman with connections to Ash’s past (Lucy Lawless).

‘Evil Dead II’: A Brief Guide To The Sequel To The Ultimate Experience In Grueling Terror

Evil Dead II

There is really no clear reason for me to write an article about Sam Raimi‘s 1987 comic horror blast Evil Dead II. It’s not celebrating an anniversary (though it did turn 25 in 2011) and no one involved in its making is preparing to do anything major in pop culture. I suppose I’m writing this in order to give myself license to regurgitate the insurmountable wealth of trivia regarding this film, which I share with the the guys at Championship Vinyl as my favorite of all time, that the disturbing level of admiration I have for it has compelled me to compile within the unguarded storage unit of my mind in the 18 years since I first watched it on a rental VHS I procured from a neighborhood video store.

Here now I present to you a compact yet nearly complete guide to Evil Dead II featuring some fascinating factoids and stories that you may or may not have already known, which all naturally depends on whether or not your love for the sequel to the ultimate experience in grueling terror runs as deeply in your soul as mine does. Bear with me, ladies and germs, for I am about to get even geekier than normally allowed at Geeks of Doom.

‘Battle Royale’ Finally Coming To DVD and Blu-ray In The U.S.

Battle Royale

First released overseas more than a decade, the futuristic Japanese survivalist action-drama Battle Royale is finally coming to DVD and Blu-ray for the first time in the United States. Distributor Anchor Bay Entertainment has even cut a brand new trailer to promote the release. You can watch it here below.

The film is based on a popular manga and is set in a time where overpopulation and an unstable economy forces the Japanese government to institute the Battle Royale Act, whereupon one class of students will be taken each year against their will to a small island and forced to fight for their lives. Outfitted with tracking devices and given an array of weapons that range from the dangerous (swords, machine guns) to the absurd (pot lids), the students finds themselves in for the literal fight of their adolescent lives. By the end of the day only one will remain standing.

Battle Royale is the best-known film of the late Japanese filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku. Throughout his four-decade-long career as a director he has called the shots on violent Yakuza gangster epics and cheesy B-movies like The Green Slime and the infamous Star Wars rip-off Message from Space. Fukasaku earned some early career respectability for directing the Japanese segments of Tora, Tora, Tora, the 1970 epic drama about the attack on Pearl Harbor. He passed away on January 12, 2003 while in production on Battle Royale II so his son Kenta took over the directing reigns in his absence.
