Last week’s Once Upon A Time rolled 37 stories into one. This fast-paced fairy tale had adventure minute to minute. Gold (Robert Carlyle) entered Belle’s (Emilie de Ravin) dreams in an effort to wake her with true love. Her dream setting was the castle where she first served him. Although the love part didn’t work (turns out even her fetus is against reconciliation), we got a “sigh” moment as they danced to the Beauty and the Beast theme song. Belle did get woken up, but left Gold. A flashback revealed that Aladdin (Deniz Akdeniz) used to be a savior, but Jafar (Oded Fehr – who definitely had to be a Dark One) broke him. The symptoms he had were ones that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is experiencing now, but hiding from everyone except Mr. Hyde (Sam Witwer). These symptoms include the shakes, and visions of her unavoidable, and really soon future death. Refugees from The Land of Untold Stories crashed in Storybrooke, and they are coaxed out of hiding and welcomed. Regina (Lana Parilla) just cannot get past the role Zelena (Rebecca Mader) played in Robin’s death, however unintentional. This made her ripe for the Evil Queen’s picking.

This season, Once Upon A Time went from Camelot to the Greek Underworld, from King Arthur to Hades with a bunch of Dark Ones thrown in. Half the characters were dead with unfinished business, and the show explored how darkness can overcome the best of heroes. The season was filled with the usual-yet-oh-so-successful formula of bad magic + bad deals + bad love… hmmm… these fairy tales don’t ever really have happy endings.

But that’s what makes it so entertaining, right? There are no limits – any realm, any time, any character, any story, any creature… can pop up to challenge our heroes.

Last week, we lost Robin Hood (Sean Maguire – nooo!!!!) and Hades (Greg Germann – meh), but Zelena and Regina (Rebecca Mader and Lana Parilla) were finally and completely united in sisterhood, and Hook and Emma (Colin O’Donoghue and Jennifer Morrison) were reunited in love.

Now he is a vengeful, yet handsome ex-boyfriend. She does not want anyone to get hurt, and pleads with Rumple to let her try to reach Gaston. Belle really doesn’t want Rumple to use dark magic. She ends up accidentally throwing Gaston into the River of Souls to save Rumple’s life. Emma (Jennifer Morrison) has a vision of Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) dying at the hands of a beast. Last week on Once Upon A Time, we meet the original Dark One, Nimue, true love of Merlin (Elliot Knight). Unfortunately, he created that monster. Having drunk from the Holy Grail, he was infused with power and immortality. He and Nimue fell in love, and he wanted to give it all up for her. She was having none of that, wanting the power to avenge her village. In the end, in present-day Storybrooke, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is successful at repairing Excalibur. Zelena (Rebecca Mader) pretends to help, but then joins Arthur’s (Liam Garrigan) crazy team. She is able to make the other half of Excalibur a sword that can command Merlin. Uh-oh.

Last week on Once Upon A Time, there were a few reveals. A long long time ago, The Dark One of that time killed Merlin’s (Elliot Knight) love, and turned him into a tree using his heartbreak tear. All this Emma (Jennifer Morrison) sees through her Dreamcatcher in flashback Camelot, alerting Regina (Lana Parilla), who decides to relive her Daniel/Cora heartbreak. Unfortunately (or fortunately) that break is too healed to be effective. Violet rejects Henry (Jared Gilmore), but we (and Henry and Robin and Regina) found out that Emma took Violet’s heart and made her do it, to capture a genuine tear from Henry. She did break the spell that was on her parents, so bad mother/good daughter. Merida (Amy Manson) is trying to teach Rumple (Robert Carlyle) to be brave so he can be the hero that pulls the sword from the stone.

Spoilers from tonight’s episode below.

Last week’s Once Upon A Time went into Cruela De Vil’s (Victoria Smurfit) history. At first we thought her a victim of her mother’s cruel imprisonment. We were fooled and so was the author. That was the twist I mentioned last week. The entire time we were completely taken in. That’s the way of fairy tales, no? The beautiful damsel with the terrible life is a victim of cruel yet uglier people. After giving her the power to control animals, he countered her cruelty by rendering her unable to take a life. Emma (Jennifer Morrison), not knowing that, was orchestrated into killing her, in order to save Henry. Regina (Lana Parilla) grabbed heart leverage in order to be able to save Robin (Sean Maguire) without Gold (Robert Carlyle) sending out a warning.
