Tim Minear Developing Resurrection Of ‘Alien Nation’ For Sci Fi

Alien Nation

The Sci Fi (SyFy? If we all refuse to acknowledge that, will they change it back?) channel has already far and away proven that they can take an old TV series, completely restructure it, and create one of the best shows of all time. Now that Battlestar Galactica has come and gone, Sci Fi is developing a new potential series based on Alien Nation with fanboy favorite Tim Minear writing.

Alien Nation first started as a movie starring James Caan and Mandy P in 1988 that turned into a 1989 TV series on Fox. The show was canceled after one season, but has seen five new TV movies made since then, as well. The show is basically a social observation using a fictional setting and aliens known as “Newcomers” who were at first made to live away from humans, but now have been allowed to reside among us; of course this doesn’t stop racism from continuing. The original movie for which this new project is being based followed an L.A. cop (Caan) whose partner is killed while investigating the Newcomers. When the first alien police officer comes to his department, he volunteers to join up with him in order to sneakily try and investigate the death of his former partner.

Let’s do the math, shall we? The sale price of $56.99 would be like paying $11.40 for each of the five individual seasons of Angel on DVD. That’s an amazing bargain!

This 30-disc DVD box set includes all five seasons of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin-off starring David Boreanaz (Bones)) and comes with a companion booklet, a letter to fans from series creator Joss Whedon, and plenty of bonus features.

‘Angel’ Star Andy Hallett Passes Away At 33

Andy Hallett

His name isn’t one you may know. His resume isn’t packed with top roles . He hasn’t won all kinds of awards. But when it comes to Andy Hallett, he is a man that has a big place in the hearts of geeks everywhere. Hallett is known for his work as the funny and lovable demon known as Lorne or The Host on the popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off — Angel. Hallett passed away on March 29, 2009 due to heart failure after a five-year battle with heart disease.

Even those who were simply only familiar with Angel, and who maybe saw an episode or two would have no problem identifying the green-skinned demon who was always wildly dressed in brightly colored suits. But those who knew and loved the show: those are the people that know that the heart that Andy Hallett brought to this character shined through in every one of the 76 episodes he appeared in.

Show creator Joss Whedon saw Hallett singing at a blues club, which is when the idea for the character of Lorne came to him. Whedon was kind enough to invite the man who inspired the character to audition, and as fate would have it, he got the part. Seeing as how he was a singer and an actor, Hallett was even able to record some songs for the show’s soundtrack.

Deal: ‘Angel’ Seasons 1-5, Box Set Blowout Deals

Amazon’s Gold Box spotlight deal of day is one you really don’t want to miss, Buffy spinoff Angel – Seasons 1-5 30-Disc DVD Set for only 50.99. This set was reduced to $99.99, marked down from $139.98, for their Boxset Blowout, but now the price has been slashed even further, reducing the price down 64%; plus, the individual season sets are all $31.99, so this is really worth it if you’re looking to get into the series. If you’re a fan of the show or you already like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, then you really have to get your hands on Angel. Remember, the spotlight deal is only for today and while supplies last.

Speaking of the DVD Boxset Blowout, it’s still going on where items are on sale for up to 60%.

Get Smart – The Complete Series Gift Set for $106.99 (down from $199.99). I have this one and love it. The original Maxwell Smart in the 1960s television spy comedy, with some commentary by series co-creator Mel Brooks.

Red Dwarf Complete Collection for $137.49 (down from $249.98). We wrote a story on this sci-fi television series and the diehard fans came out of the woodwork. This box set, which includes the complete series on 18 DVDs, has been reduced by 45%, so it’s a great time to catch up on the show before the planned one-hour special airs.

The Sopranos – The Complete Series for $199.49, which has been marked down from the original blowout sale price of $254.99 (down from $399.99 list price – jeez!).

Abbott and Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection for $83.99 (down from $119.98). This is all 28 of the comedy duo’s movies made by Universal Pictures, ones like Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy where the twosome face the Universal monsters.

Everybody Loves Raymond – The Complete Series for $122.49 (down from $199.98). I know about three people in my family that would want this complete collection of the sitcom about a dysfunction Italian family from New York (something they can relate to!) starring comedian Ray Romano.

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Complete Series for $326.99 (down from $455.95). While it’s definitely in the higher price range, I thought I’d mention it because it’s the first time the entire 7-season run is available as one box set. The individual season DVDs are between $40-$70 each (damn I paid over $100 years ago!). This 49-disc set contains all 176 episodes and has all-new special features.
