Akira Header Image

The live-action adaptation of Akira has been in development hell for the better part of the last few years. Jaume Collet-Serra was attached to direct the film at one point, with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart set to star as the film’s leads. But the project never entered production due to budgetary disagreements. In 2013, it was reported that Collet-Serra was back to direct, but not much has been heard about him and the status of the film since then. The only major development was that Daredevil season 2 showrunner Marco Ramirez was tapped to pen the new script.

Now another major development seems to be steering the live-action Akira towards production. Hot off the news that Christopher Nolan would be directing an untitled film set for a 2017 release comes word that he is in talks to produce Akira as a live-action trilogy. More on this story below.

Akira

Back in May fans of the hit Japanese manga and animated feature film Akira were filled with joy at the news that the rumored Keanu Reeves would not be starring in the planned American remake and that director Albert Hughes had left the project, leading many to think the movie would never happen.

That joy didn’t last long, however. It was announced just a couple of months later that Warner Brothers had chipped down the budget of the remake from over $100 million down to $90 million, and that they had hired Unknown and Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra to replace Hughes. Now comes word that the studio has officially given the greenlight to a live–action American Akira remake, so this bad boy is happening for real.

Take a moment to grieve.

The Twilight Zone

After a search that involved several interested candidates, Warner Brothers has chosen their director for The Twilight Zone, a fresh take on the classic Rod Serling TV series that aired from 1959 to 1964.

WB has picked Matt Reeves to direct the new movie, which will be presented as one big science fiction action story instead of the multi–story anthology format used for 1983’s Twilight Zone: The Movie.

A live-action American adaptation of the popular Japanese manga and animated feature film, Akira, has been on the way for a while now with Albert Hughes (of the Hughes Brothers) attached to direct.

Many rumors have swirled around the proposed film, but nothing quite solid has ever manifested yet. And that seems to be just fine with Akira fans everywhere, who have made it pretty clear that they don’t think a live-action adaptation would work and they don’t want to see it happen. Of course that’s just what they say now, and if a really well-done movie is made with the proper cast and an intriguing trailer is released, those very same fans would likely be singing a different tune.

Falling To Pieces? Live-Action ‘Akira’ Gets New Writer, PG-13 Stamp

For many fans of the popular six-part Japanese manga or the 1988 animated film, the announcement of a live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo‘s Akira was a scary but quietly intriguing prospect. With today’s filmmaking technologies, there’s no doubt that a faithful and well-made film could be amazing to see, if put in the right hands.

Then came word that Albert Hughes and Allan Hughes would be stepping in to direct the movie for Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way Productions.

At that point, Children of Men, Iron Man, and Cowboys and Aliens writing duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby were working on the script, but it sounds like now a change has been made. In an interview with Collider, producer Andrew Lazar talked all things Akira. Among the things discussed, he shared that the new writer working on the project is Albert Torres. Also, that the first of the proposed two films would be based on parts 1-3 of the manga, and the second of course will focus on parts 4-6.

Akira

We’ve known for a while now that a live-action version of popular Japanese anime Akira was on the way through Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way Productions. Apart from knowing this, not many updates have been offered so far, but according to NY Mag’s Vulture Blog, a director — or directors — are about to be obtained.

Sources say that Warner Brothers is in negotiations with the Hughes Brothers, Allen and Albert, to take on the remake. The brothers are just coming off of a WB project with the post-apocalyptic drama, The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington. It would appear that the studio very much liked what the duo did with that property, and that it would best to scoop them right back up again here.

Tale Of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ Set For A Dark Re-Telling

Red Riding Hood

With Tim Burton’s new visually-stunning take on Alice in Wonderland well on its way, it appears that another beloved childhood tale could be on its way to a cinematic treatment: Little Red Riding Hood.

Leonardo DiCaprio‘s production company, Appian Way, has acquired the rights to develop a new feature film based on the fabled tale of a young girl dressed in red who is trying to get to her sick grandmother’s house with a vicious wolf hot on her trail. The story is said to date back to the middle ages; it was first published by the Brothers Grimm, who were portrayed by Matt Damon and Heath Ledger in the Terry Gilliam movie of the same name.

This new take on Red Riding Hood is supposedly going to be a Gothic-styled re-telling, which could work beautifully. The oldest versions of the story sometimes featured a werewolf instead of just a regular wolf. One of the stories even ended with the wolf actually eating Red in a gruesome and depressing finale. It will be really interesting to see how dark they actually want to go with this.
