The GoD List

Each and every week, I, “Ant-Man!” Henchman 21 and “The Wasp!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 23, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

There are weeks when I get excited about scores of books that are being released. And then there are other weeks. This is one of those other weeks, as we get a whole batch of very good comics; Secret Wars is still rolling, DC continues to roll out new books in their most recent relaunch, IDW, Dark Horse, Image and the others pump out a fine line of books. So, we’re just going with a shorter list this week, including a long running series ending in a spectacular fashion, a book from last week that I didn’t get a chance to talk about, and a book you probably never thought you would see. Let’s get The GoD List started!

The GoD List | July 8, 2015

Each and every week, I, “Not at SDCC!” Henchman 21 and “Ditto!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of July 8, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Yes, it’s that time of year again, time for the biggest comics convention in America, even if the show has moved beyond being just about comics. But it’s okay, all comic conventions have moved past comics to one degree or another. Sorry, got off track there. It’s San Diego week, which means there are a lot of new series and big hardcovers out this week to entice buyers at the show and even those of us not at the show. In fact, it’s better for those of us not going to SDCC, because we don’t have to wait in line and then figure out how to lug all this stuff back in our luggage. So rejoice at the ease with which you can buy your comics, for it is truly a good week to celebrate comics. And celebrate we shall on this week’s The GoD List!

Wow, those Predators really get around. We know from the films that they treat our world like their own personal hunting lease. We’ve seen them fight virtually everything under the sun from Batman to Aliens to Tarzan, but nothing could have prepared us for Archie Vs. Predator #1! I saw this one in the lists and just knew I had to read it. And I bet you’re curious, too!

The setting is Riverdale as our buddy Archie and his pals debate on what to do on their Spring Break. Thanks to a miraculous windfall of Jughead’s, the group gets a free trip to a beach resort. The odd ducks out here are Cheryl and Jason, who seem bent on making life difficult for the teens.

Afterlife with Archie Header

For as long as the Archie comics have been in circulation, it’s incredible that it has taken this long for a film adaptation to be produced. Maybe it can be attributed to the fact that Archie comics have long been known to lack the same luster as something that comes from DC, Marvel, or Dark Horse. But Warner Brothers has finally found a way for the iconic comic book character to come alive on the big screen, with a slight twist of course.

It’s being reported that Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore has just signed a deal to helm an adaptation of Afterlife with Archie, a spinoff comic in which Archie, Jughead, Betty, and the rest of the gang having a run in with the undead.

Art by Dan DeCarlo
Letters by Vince DeCarlo, Victor Gorelick and Bill Yoshida

Covers by Dan DeCarlo
IDW Publishing
Release Date: March 19, 2013
Cover Price: $24.99

The latest installment of the reprinting of Dan DeCarlo‘s exquisite rendering of the comic strip Archie is now available.

To put this comic into perspective, the late 1950s pint sized pop singer Frankie Lymon once waxed “I’m not a juvenile delinquent,” speaking of course about his exile from the rambunctious lifestyles that teenaged leather jacketed and Brycreemed up hair exhibited, getting in run ins and scraps with the law at every turn they could, purposely and accidentally. Someone of that era who could easily have echoed Lymon’s words was the comic book character Archie, who lived a teenage lifestyle right out of the universe of the old Andy Hardy series which starred Mickey Rooney way back when, living idyllic lifestyles of innocuous, clean cut fun, skirt chasing and being chased. While Archie may have been furthest from the complex young characters immortalized on the sliver screen by people like Marlon Brando and James Dean during the 1950s, he still lived a life where he constantly got into trouble, albeit of the fun loving, devil-may-care variety.
