Ava DuVerney‘s A Wrinkle In Time is already promising to be one of the most anticipated films of 2018. It touts a stellar cast and gives a visionary director the keys to an acclaimed novel that takes audiences through time and space. The first trailer was just a mere peek at the film’s epic scope. In it we got a look at the juxtaposition between the film’s real-world and the out of this world sci-fi feel. Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle In Time title card

Selma and The 13th are both career-defining films for Ava DuVernay. Though the director was close to helming Marvel Studios’ Black Panther, she still found a way to reach a very important milestone. As the director of A Wrinkle In Time, she is first African-American woman to direct a $100 million film. It’s a significant feat if you pay attention to who usually gets these high budget directing gigs.

Now with the D23 Expo just around the corner, we are getting a better look at what is to come with a bunch of new images from the film. Check them all out below.

The mannequin challenge craze has caught the nation by storm. And while I believe that it is a popular trend that will eventually find its way out the door, film PR might as well use it to promote their movies while the trend is still hot.

Ryan Coogler

Marvel Studios’ long-gestating Phase Three feature Black Panther, which recently signed Joe Robert Cole for scripting duties and saw its release date moved up from July 2018 to February of that year, so far has had a mighty difficult time locking down the perfect director.

Ava DuVernay (Selma) was first offered the gig over the summer, but she took a pass, as did F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), who signed on to direct Furious 8 for Universal instead. Marvel seems determined to secure the services of a first-rate filmmaker, and according to a new rumor it appears that they may have found a new front-runner in Ryan Coogler.

Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow

It was almost a banner year for Colin Trevorrow. Following his Sundance film festival hit Safety Not Guaranteed, he came out with his second major directorial effort, this summer’s Jurassic World. The fourth film of the franchise beat Marvel’s The Avengers‘s record for the number one weekend opening film at the worldwide box office. He was then recently named as director of Star Wars: Episode IX.

But now, the director finds himself in a bit of hot water after he attempted to address the issue of gender inequality in Hollywood. This has been an on-going issue, with many fighting for gender and racial diversity on the creative and performance front. In an attempt to explain this problem, Trevorrow has found himself on the receiving end of much criticism. After the jump see what he had to say, and how some are responding to his Twitter post.

Ava DuVernay Black Panther

Ava DuVernay‘s stunning work on Selma put her as one of the frontrunners to direct Black Panther. Though there was some initial excitement on the possibility, DuVernay ultimately walked away from the job, citing creative differences as the reason. “Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me,” said DuVernay.

As we have all seen before with Patty Jenkins, Edgar Wright, Alan Taylor, and Joss Whedon, all had to work under the Marvel guidelines, connecting their work to the collective Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not really an easy job when you want to maintain your creative input, while being pressured to be part of a universe you may not be as concerned with.

More on why DuVernay turned down the job below.
