Comedians 101-02

The Comedians
Season 1 Episode 2 “Come To The House”
Directed by Larry Charles
Written by Ben Wexler
Starring Billy Crystal, Josh Gad, Megan Ferguson, Larry Charles, Stephnie Weir, Steven Weber
FX
Air Date: Thursday, April 16th, 2015 10pm

Last week FX debuted The Comedians a documentary style comedy about the making of a new comedy sketch show: “The Billy & Josh Show” starring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad. Only problem… the stars cannot stand one another.

The second episode of the show, titled “Come to the House,” demonstrates how the two stars’ combative personalities are affecting those around them. Director Jamie (Steven Weber as a woman) seems to be struggling, while the head writer Mitch (Matt Oberg) can’t seem to get Esme (Megan Ferguson), the assistant, to understand her role… as an assistant. When he suggests a coffee run, she responds, “YES, I’ll take a dirty chai!” Obviously she’s never seen The Devil Wears Prada.

The Comedians should be hilarious. You have the legend Billy Crystal. You have the newcomer in Josh Gad. You have veteran comedy writer/director Larry Charles. Everything adds up… almost. Like most pilots, you can only hope you’re left with a desire to see where the show is going. Do you want to take the ride with these characters? After a bit of a bumpy start, yes I do.

Jim Henson's Labyrinth Goblins

Variety is reporting that The Jim Henson Company has brought in the great Billy Crystal to write, produce, and star in an upcoming animated feature of theirs titled Which Witch. But it’s another teeny tiny bit of information that really stands out.

At the very bottom of the report, mentioned as a side note, is a list of projects currently being developed related to existing Henson properties. They include the Fraggle Rock movie we’ve heard about in the past, a sequel to The Dark Crystal that pops up in the news every now and again, a new movie based on the Emmet Otter character, and a sequel to the 1986 fantasy tale Labyrinth. Wait, what? A Labyrinth sequel?!

The Digital Wire Blu-ray/DVD Release News: Murder, Morbidity, Maturation, Mischief

Another week, another edition of The Digital Wire here at Geeks of Doom. Try not to look so enthusiastic. Major Blu-ray/DVD release announcements were scant this week, but news of some interesting titles soon to make their way to multiple home viewing platforms wasn’t, so I’ve compiled the best of the odds ‘n’ ends. We’ve got undead girlfriends, some Southern-fried slaughter, mismatched cops tearing up the Windy City, salacious studio hilarity, and one of the best-reviewed motion pictures of 2014. So I guess that last one is a pretty major announcement. My bad.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power.

Walt Disney Home Entertainment
Release Date: Oct. 29, 2013

It’s time to scare it up, my fellow geeks! Monsters University sees its home release, and surprisingly, the Blu-ray edition of Pixar’s latest feature is wicked good. Explore Monsters University with me, shall we?

James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) may have given the impression they were always best buddies in Monsters, Inc., but Monsters University proves just the opposite. Travel back in time with Sulley and Mikey to their young adulthood, when Sulley’s pomposity and Mike’s unabashed idealism contrasted with their older personalities. Mike craves to scare for a living, despite his less-than-menacing appearance, and must prove to naysayers that he belongs at the Scare School. He works ceaselessly to understand ways to haunt and chill. Sulley, on the other hand, thinks his family name and reputation will lead him on a road to success, but his egotism impairs his image and potential. The two must collaborate with the non-impressive Oozma Kappa fraternity to save their spots in the Scare School.

Monsters University PosterMonsters University
Director: Dan Scanlon
Cast: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Aubrey Plaza, Nathan Fillion, Bobby Moynihan, Charlie Day, Joel Murray, Sean Hayes, Dave Foley
Walt Disney Pictures | Pixar
Rated G | 110 Minutes
Release Date: June 21, 2013

Directed by Dan Scanlon, Monsters University is a prequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc that concerns the origins of Michael “Mike” Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan’s (voiced by John Goodman) friendship and professional partnership.

Set 10 years before Monsters Inc., Scanlon’s film is essentially a rehash of 1984’s Revenge of the Nerds with a group of uncool kids who form their own fraternity to compete against a gang of jocks and bullies.

Mike and Sulley are both in the university’s prestigious scaring program but have differing philosophies on the art of terrifying little children. Mike is the quintessential college nerd, devoting 100 percent of his time to studying in his dorm room. Sulley is the prototypical jock, the son of a famous Scarer who coasts through classes thanks to his undeniable natural talent.

Final Exam ‘Monsters University’ Trailer Released As The School Year Comes To An End

Monsters University Image

As the school year comes to a close, and joyous kids everywhere begin preparing for what’s sure to be the most epicest summer of all times for real real, Pixar has released a “Final Exam” trailer for the upcoming Monsters, Inc. prequel, Monsters University.

All of the trailers have made the movie look like a lot of fun, but this is probably my personal favorite of the bunch. Instead of focusing on the rivalry between a young James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), instead it focuses more on Mike and his lifelong determination to beat the odds and become a scarer.

Check out the new trailer for Monsters University below now!

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 Header Image

A pair of posters for highly anticipated upcoming animated movies have found their way to the ‘net.

The first is for Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. prequel, titled Monsters University. The movie tells the story of when James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) first met way back in college and hated each other, and how they eventually came to be best friends. It hits theaters on June 21, 2013.

The second movie is Sony’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, the sequel to every food lover’s best dream (and worst nightmare) movie. In it, Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and others are forced to return to the town of Swallow Falls to deal with the many “sentient food beasts” that have overrun it. The sequel will be released on September 27th.

Continue below now to check out the new posters for Monsters University and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
