Orbit: John LennonOrbit: John Lennon
Written by Marc Shapiro

Graphics and Editing by Darren G. Davis
Bluewater Productions
Release date: March 28, 2012
Kindle Edition

John Lennon, musician, legend, influence that stretches far and wide, messiah, pariah, master of wit, innovator, trailblazer… comic book character?

That’s exactly what Bluewater Productions tries to do with these adjectives and descriptions to bring to comic book life of one of the most enigmatic and forcefully creative individuals of the 20th Century (or arguably any century for that matter) with Orbit: John Lennon.

Bluewater, known for their prior work immortalizing many famous figures in its colored etchings within squares, now tackles the larger than life figure in Lennon. But, they unfortunately make the same clumsy errors here that deterred the other biographical comic book treatments that also attempted to mythologize public and famous figures from all stripes.

Written by Ken Janssens

Letters by Bernie Lee
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: March 14, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

I have long been a fan of all things Holmesian, even the ridiculously overzealous films of the last few years. I’ve read everything I could get my hands on for decades and comics are no exception. It seems like Bluewater Comics is trying to build a library of literary figures and who better to add to that collection than the world famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes: Victorian Knights #2 drops us into the plot right after Angela Farrell, a local “working girl” has been murdered. Much action ensues… We have a royal carriage being vandalized by local anti-monarchists, which turns out to be less than what it appears. Even the death of the prostitute is not what it seems. The twisting plot is definitely an homage to the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Story: John Saul
Written by David McIntee

Letters by Warren Montgomery
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: February 22, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

John Saul’s The God Project #1 is the first comic adaptation of any of John Saul‘s work. As a mainstay in the horror genre, it is surprising that it has taken this long to see any of his work rendered in sequential art. While I haven’t read this particular book, I do know the author’s work fairly well and I was quite happy to be able to review this incarnation of one of his earlier works.

The story is a pretty standard one here at the beginning. Three teenagers at play and one disappears, the whole premise of the story hinges on finding the missing teen and the events that transpire during the initial search.

The story of Gabrielle Giffords is one of triumph over adversity. On January 8, 2011, the Arizona Representative was shot in the head while giving a public speech in her home state. Though she survived the attack, Giffords faced many hurdles in her recovery and continues to face them even now.

Female Force: Gabrielle Giffords is a new 32-page full-color biographical comic book from Bluewater Productions that details the Congresswomen’s life from her many academic achievements, to her time as a business woman and state politician, and later as a member of Congress. We learn a little about her childhood and also about her relationship with husband, NASA astronaut Mark Kelly. Of course, great attention is given to the shooting and Giffords’s subsequent efforts to recover from her extensive injuries.

Cover Price: $3.99

I have to admit, Logan’s Run: Aftermath #4 took me by surprise. It was actually a really good science fiction story, that, like all good Sci-Fi stories, is routed in humanity.

This issue is basically the story of Tara, the main character’s long-time rival. Instead of making her a villain just for the sake of having an antagonist, writer Paul J. Salamoff gives her a very credible “origin” story that shows her slow descent into conflict with Logan. And it’s a great story, one that builds slowly, not just a “he embarrassed me so I’m going to make him pay” kind of tale. Very entertaining read and I’m actually looking forward to the next issue.

In this first issue of the new Legend of Isis series, we jump right into the thick of the action. The problem is there’s not really any set up. So if you’ve never read this title before you’re going to be a little bit lost, as I was.

Writers Darren G. Davis and Kenton Daniels deliver some great action for a first issue, most of the time premiere issue are all set up with about two pages of action at the very end of the book. In this case, I really think that that formula might have helped them a little.

Twilight of the Gods #0 is the beginning of what appears to be a new start for Bluewater Comics. Based entirely around the Greek pantheon of gods, it portrays them as being dependent upon mankind for survival. If people cease to believe, the gods cease to exist. I’ve seen this premise before, but there was just enough originality to it so that I wasn’t completely turned off.
