The Boondock Saints Image

No movie better defines the phrase “word of mouth hit” than Troy Duffy’s 1999 cult classic, The Boondock Saints. People forget just how long ago 1999 was, and no, I don’t mean numerically (16-years). In 1999 I was 17, waiting for dial up connection to get my AOL going so I could instant message my friends. My cell phone was the size of a brick, and I had a huge collection of movies… on video cassette. So when my friend Mike introduced me to The Boondock Saints, yes, on VHS, I had not heard of it on the internet, and looked it up on IMDB.com. We watched with friends and almost immediately, I was hooked. I found a copy at the video store and took it up to college with me, where I played it for everyone. By my junior year, friends were now passing along my new DVD of it and we had incorporated drinking games into it. The movie became such a phenomenon that several of my good friends have Boondock Saints tattoos, and we like to claim that we loved star Norman Reedus before it was cool… sorry Walking Dead fans.

It’s been a little over a year since writer and director Troy Duffy said that The Boondock Saints 3 was still happening. Not much has transpired since then, but Duffy offered some new info recently.

In a Facebook Q&A session, Duffy shared an official title for the planned trilogy-maker, as well as some details on what the movie will be about. You can see what he had to say below, but be warned that there is a Boondock Saints II spoiler involved if you’ve not yet seen the sequel.

The Boondock Saints Image

As many of you know, it took a decade for director Troy Duffy to get his long-awaited sequel to the 1999 cult classic The Boondock Saints made. But, after much patience, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day did finally get made. And if you’ve seen it, you know that it made sure to leave an intriguing door open for a possible trilogy-making movie.

While nothing has been made official yet, The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has made sure to give fans hoping for said third movie a shiny bit of hope that they won’t have to wait nearly as long for The Boondock Saints III, saying recently that the movie is indeed happening with fellow Saint Sean Patrick Flanery and Duffy both involved.

No matter what your personal opinion of The Boondock Saints or Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day might be, you can’t help but love and respect something like this.

USO shows are a staple in entertaining and bringing smiles to the faces of our military’s troops as they serve our country, and countless stars and celebrities have made their way to these shows over the years to do their best to keep spirits and morale as high as possible during tough times.

Now, stars of the two Saints films, Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus (who spoke to us a while back about Boondock II among other things), as well as Brian Mahoney, director Troy Duffy, and producer Chris Brinker are heading off on their own trip. Their destination: the Middle East, where they will take part in one of these USO entertainment tours, allowing them to meet many of our country’s soldiers, sign autographs, and take pictures with those who risk their lives to defend our nation.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints DayBoondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Release Date: March 9, 2010

If you read Geeks of Doom, you know I’ve been one of the biggest supporters of a sequel to 1999’s The Boondock Saints for as long as one has been rumored, which is about eleven years now. And from the moment Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day became official, any time anything was released about the movie, I was jumping on it. Various different posts came of it all, including interviews with stars Clifton Collins Jr. and Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus.

Because of my love for the first and my being proud of its Boston roots, that made me a likely biased candidate to review the film when it was released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it was in-fact only fitting that I do so. I did enjoy the movie after all was said and done, but surprisingly, there were also things that I was not a big fan of and I’ll be sure to share them all!

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day movie poster

Since Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day finally came out in theaters on October 30, 2009, the goodies to report have been scarce. And Looking at the number in the title, you may think that this is a bad news post, but alas, this is not so!

All Saints Day had a budget of only $8 million, and with it now at the $11 million mark, that’s a big score for the film. Keep in mind, this is an indie movie, so it was only released in a maximum 500 theaters (as compared to the 3,461 theaters that giant movies like Avatar get), so this is a strong showing. In fact, these numbers now make Boondock Saints II the top-grossing film with a limited release in 2009 and Apparition Films’ top-grossing film of all time.

The Boondock Saints Realize The Sins Of ‘Twilight’ & Take Out Robert Pattinson In True Saints Fashion

Saints vs. Twilight

OK, I’ll admit it: this isn’t really news. But in a world where Twilight is everywhere you look and read, stuff like this is needed to keep everyone (me, me!) sane.

Basically, our favorite sibling assassins with hearts of gold, the Boondock Saints (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus), stopped by MTV recently to talk about their long-awaited sequel, Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day. While there, they were prompted to take part in a small Big Buck Safari challenge. If you do not know what Big Buck Safari games are, if you’ve ever been in an arcade, you’d recognize them as a hunting simulation in which you hold an orange plastic gun and try and hunt for the best deer.

This isn’t the amusing part of the day, though: before leaving, the Saints made sure that they set their superior status in stone by taking a stand-up of The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Robert Pattinson and giving it the true McManus brothers treatment for those who have sinned against mankind; that’s right, two shots to the back of the head. All we need now is some audio of them saying their prayer beforehand and some pennies for the eyes and all would be well in the world.

‘Boondock Saints’ Director Troy Duffy Breaks His Silence On ‘Overnight’

The Movie God   |  @   |

Overnight

The documentary Overnight is a film that follows Troy Duffy, a former bartender who became an overnight Hollywood sensation when his script The Boondock Saints caught everyone’s eyes and delivered him a deal with Harvey Weinstein and Miramax Films, and a $15 Million budget to make his movie. Film makers Tony Montana and Mark Brian Smith followed Duffy and his friends and family as they reached the highest of highs with the movie deal and a music deal, and then lost them both as Troy seemingly refused to kiss the system’s feet.

The movie painted the man in an interesting light. As you can plainly tell, a large amount of people flat-out decided that he was an ass and that they hated him based solely on this movie, and something never felt quite right about it. Because of that, I’ve personally always been interested to hear what Troy himself thought about it all, and now we know thanks to an interview that he did with /Film‘s David Chen.

Click over for direct quotes from Troy Duffy as well as the the studio and film makers behind the documentary.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day movie poster

In case you’re one of the few fans who haven’t heard yet (where have you been?), after a painful ten year wait, a sequel to the 1999 Troy Duffy cult classic The Boondock Saints has finally been made, and it will be released in select theaters this Friday, October 30. Over the past year or so we’ve seen many production journals, some images, posters, and trailers, and we’ve even had the honor of interviewing cast members Clifton Collins Jr. as well as Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus. And while it’s uncertain who will be able to run out and see the film this Friday, IGN has one more goodie for us to enjoy: the first five minutes of the film.

The footage just basically sets up the movie briefly, showing the brothers hiding out in Ireland when they realize that they need to go back to Boston and deal with someone who’s trying to frame them. They’re not in Ireland nearly as long as I thought they were going to be, but no one ever complained about getting right down to business.
