Damien
Season 1 Episode 10: “Ave Satani”
Directed by Nick Copus
Written by Glen Mazzara
Created by Glen Mazzara
Starring Bradley James, Barbara Hershey, Megalyn EK, Omid Abtahi, Scott Wilson, David Meunier
A&E
Air Date: Monday, May 9th, 2016, 10pm

“Ave Satani” was the name of the Oscar nominated original song (sang in Latin) from the 1976 film, The Omen, upon which the Damien series is based. It is a fitting title for the season’s final episode, as it seems Damien Thorn has embraced his inner Antichrist. Sister Greta’s attempted exorcism last week was met with limited success, as he pulled himself out of a shallow grave and turned the Megiddo dagger on her. Damien (Bradley James) has the mark of the devil, and is constantly surrounded by mysterious deaths. Despite Detective Shay (David Meunier) being convinced of his involvement, and apparent high ranking acolytes in his stead, Damien has maintained an almost childlike innocence, unwilling to be a part of the evil that shrouds him. He has watched his ex be swallowed in a construction site accident, and long time friends like John Lyons (Scott Wilson) are in cahoots with the obsessed Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey). Even his closest friends don’t know where to stand. Tonight, Damien will make his final choice and perhaps make the ultimate sacrifice.

Last week’s Damien was maybe my favorite episode of the season. Charles Powell (Joe Doyle) was killing in Damien’s name. Damien (Bradley James) made it clear he wanted nothing to do with the potential of being the Antichrist, and beat Powell nearly to death. It was another acolyte, his psychiatrist, who finished Powell off in a rather bloody finale. More bodies on the pile surrounding Damien Thorn, and Detective Shay (David Meunier) is feeling the heat… literally. Almost burned alive in his car while following Damien, he has been attacked by dogs, and had his son threatened at home. How far is Shay willing to go to find answers? Speaking of questions and answers, Amani (Omid Abtahi) figured out that his new hookup Veronica (Melanie Scrofano) is actually Ann Rutledge’s daughter, and was scoping out Damien’s place on her behalf. Veronica might be dead after messing with the wrong nun. With only 2 episodes left in their first season, let’s see how unholy Damien can get!

Last week on Damien, we learned some eerie details into Damien’s youth. As an adult he seemed surprisingly well adjusted… well, before he learned he may be the Antichrist. He was a decorated war photographer, had friends in high places, and had real actual friends and people who cared for him. But Detective Shay (David Meunier) has dug up some interesting information about him. A boarding school buddy, Cray Marquand (Cody Ray Thompson) told of Damien’s proclivities towards the strange and dangerous behavior, including a secret organization and an initiation gone awry where his roommate was left burned over the majority of his body. The burn victim, Charles Powell (Joe Doyle) doesn’t take kindly to being talked about, and sought out Marquand to brutally murder him in gym shower. Who is, and what is the real Damien? These are the pivotal questions going forward.

Last week on Damien, I fell victim to one of the classic misdirections; the dream state episode. But it was really convincing! I mean we’re dealing with a show about the Antichrist and those manipulating him, so to me anything is fair game. Damien (Bradley James) tried committing suicide, but was saved at the last minute. His dream, fueled by drugs, alcohol, and carbon dioxide, saw Lyons (Scott Wilson) and Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey) in cahoots to manipulate him. They even pulled a trick involving his long lost “mother”. His friends Amani (Omid Abtahi) and Simone (Megalyn Echikunwoke) are also conspiring against him. Now awake, he’s weary of everyone and determined to find the truth about himself.

Last week on Damien, after a mindtrip around the VA hospital last week culminated with him assisting a patient with suicide, Damien (Bradley James) went to his family’s estate, locked himself in the garage, turned the car on, and went to sleep. Of course, he didn’t succeed in killing himself; a couple of canine companions showed up to drag his carcass from the vehicle. Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey) tells the doctors it was an accident brought on by substance abuse… but Damien is tired of the copious amount of death that surrounds him.

Damien (Bradley James) is in a strange place. One one hand he is bonafide hero; a decorated war photographer who spends his spare time pulling kids off train tracks. Conversely, he’s also the Antichrist… you know that pesky elephant in the room. While Damien appears unwilling to follow his destiny, those around him seem destined to force it on to him. Above all, is Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey) who runs a global enterprise and is a lawyer for the Thorn family estate. She successfully threw off Detective James Shay (David Meunier) with stories of Damien being a personal mess prone to fits of anger and craziness. Although Shay and his family were attacked by mysterious forces at their home, so obviously, they are still viewed as a threat to Damien’s existence.

Last week on Damien, Damien (Bradley James) seemed to accept his fate, or at least part of it. Despite his misgivings about Ann Rutledge (Barbara Hershey), a mysterious one percenter with a shrine to him, he willingly confided in her. Also tugging at Damien’s strings was John Lyon (Scott Wilson). Lyon simultaneously warned him about Rutledge, but was working with her to expedite the process of turning Damien from a war photographer into his rightful role as the Antichrist. Damien can’t seem to grasp the whole evil concept though, as he’s spent his life documenting the worst travesties, and even last week saved a young boy from an oncoming train. The bizarre “accidents” that follow Damien around peaked the interest of Detective James Shay (David Meunier), who in turn has gained certain unwanted canine followers…

Richard Donner’s The Omen (1976) is legitimately the scariest movie I ever saw. As a young kid, I made it an hour before I ran screaming from the room and slept with the light on for weeks. I couldn’t get Jerry Goldsmith’s Oscar winning score out of my head, and I had nightmares of the theme, “Ave Satani.” While The Exorcist (1973) is more notorious, The Omen was more subtle, relying on the music, and editing to create horrific moments, rather than persistent gross out shocks. So when I heard a show based on one my favorite horror films was coming to the network that already has one of the best horror shows on TV (A&E/Bates Motel) I was psyched. I was even more psyched after watching the premiere episode “The Beast Rises,” the 33-year old version of myself was similar to the 9-year old; after watching it, I stayed awake another 2 hours unable to sleep.
