Image Comics 2015

Image Comics held its annual Image Expo on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Fransisco, CA, where a host of top creators in the industry were on hand, including Brian K. Vaughan, Todd McFarlane, Marjorie Liu, Scott Snyder, Emi Lenox, Jeff Lemire, Emma Rios, James Robinson, and Brandon Graham.

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson gave the keynote address and introduced the excellent line-up of writers and artists to the stage. An abundance of new (and returning) titles were announced — as well as some top-notch collaborations.

Of the Image titles announced, here are my Top 5 Anticipated Series of 2015.

Science fiction films, television, books, and comics are in some way inspired by our desire to explore the unknown. At the core of every Sci-Fi story is the discovery of a place or people that are strange and wholly unknown to us. The metallic monster crushing cities or the alien devouring a ship’s crew one by one kicks our imaginations into full gear. Every day we wake up, go to work, come home, and go to bed, then repeat the whole process again. We gravitate towards the bizarre and unknown because it is simply something different. Prophet is that something different we are all searching for at the end of the day. This is a comic that not only explores the unknown, but also embraces it with reckless intensity.

I’ve been reading comics for a while and I am always on the lookout for something new, and that is exactly what I got with Prophet #23. Prophet is an insanely cool comic book series that features a warrior who wakes up in a strange future filled with wondrous creatures. His mission? To restart a bunch of satellites that will put the human race back into action. All he has to complete his mission is a knife, a floating robot translator, and a strange piece of clothing that adapts to his every need, even if that need is a new arm. The last two issues have introduced us to the world of Prophet, and with this issue, we start to see the bigger picture of what is going on in this series.

King CityKing City TP
By Brandon Graham
Image Comics
Release Date: March 7, 2012
Cover Price: $19.99

Brandon Graham‘s King City represents everything I love about creator-owned comics. In the way that Martin Scorsese directs films that pay homage to cinema, Brandon Graham crafts King City like a love letter to the comics and culture that raised us all. From ninja cats to world destroying elder gods, the collected King City drips with adoration for everything geek.

Joe has returned home to King City after leaving California. In California, Joe trained to become the perfect thief and ninja known as a catmaster. As a catmaster, Joe is able to use his cat, Earthling J.J Cattingworth, as a tool or weapon depending on what injection he uses. Other residents of King City include Pete, a lovesick petty criminal who just fell in love with the alien he helped deliver to some pretty awful people. Joe’s ex-girlfriend also haunts the pages of King City as she paints mustaches on billboards and worries over her drug-addicted Xombie War veteran boyfriend.
