Interview: ‘Cow Boy: A Boy and His Horse’ Creators Nate Cosby & Chris Eliopoulos

Cow Boy: A Boy And His Horse

Comics have a deep history with the western genre. For many years weekly books were filled with hard-talking, quick-shooting cowboys and vigilantes. Needless to say, it is a form that is constantly being reinvented for new and interesting content. Nate Cosby (Jim Henson’s The Storyteller, Pigs) and Chris Eliopoulos (Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius, Misery Loves Sherman) have taken the western in an entirely new direction with their new comic Cow Boy: A Boy and His Horse.

Cow Boy: A Boy and His Horse tells the story of Boyd Linney, a 10-year-old bounty hunter who is on a hunt for his very own family. Cow Boy also features four western short stories from Roger Langridge, Colleen Coover, Brian Clevinger & Scott Wegener, and Mike Maihack.

I was fortunate enough to be able to talk with Nate and Chris about the origins of Cow Boy, as well as what it was like pitching the story of a child bounty hunter to publisher Archaia Entertainment.

Most all-ages comics try to avoid the hard, harsh realities of growing up. The idea is to typically remind readers that being young is supposed to be full of wonder and magic. Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos take the alternate road in their graphic novel Cow Boy: A Boy And His Horse. The story’s main character, Boyd, is a 10-year-old bounty hunter on the hunt for his own criminal family. Growing up just got a little harsher. Cow Boy: A Boy And His Horse is a beautifully written and illustrated graphic novel that reminds us that sometimes our parents are not always good people.

Atomic Robo Last Stop

If you don’t know by now, I am a huge fan of Atomic Robo, the comic book series from Red 5 Comics written by Brian Clevinger and drawn by Scott Wegener. I was very excited when it was announced that animation studio The Fictory would be working on an animated short based on the character and was even more excited when I saw some footage from it.

The film is called Atomic Robo: Last Stop, and while some work has been done on the project, finalizing it has been a bit of a problem. Now it’s time for me, and possibly you to chip in to help The Fictory complete production on the project by donating to their Kickstarter project.

Cover Price: $3.50

One of the amazing things about Atomic Robo is the way each story arc has managed to tell its own kind of tale. We’ve had war stories, pulp adventure stories, and horror stories. With Atomic Robo and The Ghost of Station X, we get a full-fledged mystery, and with issue #5, we finally learn who has been behind the various problems that have been besetting Robo for the previous four issues. What we learn is surprising and a little heart breaking, and is just another example of why this is such a great series and why it should be on everyone’s reading list.

Atomic Robo
Ghost of Station X #1 (of 5)
Written by Brian Clevinger
Art by Scott Wegener
Red 5 Comics
$3.50
Released date: September 7, 2011

Atomic Robo is back, baby!!! I am thrilled that one of my favorite series has returned for its sixth series, this time subtitled The Ghost of Station X. If you have never heard of Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener’s series before, it tells the tale of Robo, an automaton created around the turn of the century by Nikola Tesla. Each miniseries takes place in a different time period in Robo’s life, bouncing back and forth in time. Volume 6 takes place in modern times, and deals with Robo and his team of Action Scientists being asked by NASA to rescue the crew of an orbiting space station. Unfortunately, they may not have the time or equipment in order to make the rescue. These are the Action Scientist’s though, and no job is beyond their ability.

C2E2 2010: ‘Atomic Robo’ Writer Brings Back The Infinity Gauntlet

Geeks of Doom Invades C2E2 2010

2009-04-16-infinityAt yesterday’s MONDO MARVEL panel at the 2010 Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) saw a bunch of new titles announced, and one that has me excited is an out of continuity project by Atomic Robo writer Brian Clevinger.

The new series is called The Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet and was described as a complete reimagining of the original story, published in 1991. Apparently Clevinger was told to read the original series, then forget everything he just read and come up with his own Infinity Gauntlet story.

In the new story, Thanos has the Infinity Guantlet and a group of Avengers has to get it back before everything dies. We’ll have to read the series to find out exactly how it differs from the original story, but if it’s anything like Clevinger’s other works, it will have a lot of action and humor.

Atomic Robo, Vol. 4 #1Atomic Robo: Revenge of the Vampire Dimension #1 (of 4)
Written by Brian Clevinger
Art by Scott Wegener
Colors by Ronda Pattison
Letters by Jeff Powell
Red 5 Comics
Price: $3.50
Release date: February 17, 2010

For three years now, Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener have been presenting us with the ongoing adventures of Atomic Robo and his fighting scientist. They’ve given us stories of giant Nazi killing machines, walking pyramids, and monsters from beyond all time and space. I’ve read this series since the beginning, and I have to say that this is the best issue of the series yet.

The mix of comedy and action has been this series strong suit from the beginning, and it remains one of the best things about this series, but artist Scott Wegener has really improved since the first series and maybe this is just the first time I really appreciated that fact. He has become a master at laying out the panels on the page in the best way to tell the joke. The layout of each page is very simple; four or five panels each page, but the images that he chooses for each page work perfectly. The storytelling is rock solid, and everything about the art makes this comic work.
