Later this week the first movie in Universal’s shared Dark Universe franchise kicks off with The Mummy. Tom Cruise stars in the movie, but it’s not the only thing you’ll see him in this year. Releasing this fall is another Universal title starring Cruise, American Made.

In the movie Cruise plays a pilot who partakes in work of questionable legality, which leads to him being recruited by much bigger and more powerful employers. If a Top Gun 2 wasn’t already in the works, you could picture this as a sequel mixed with a bit of Blow starring Johnny Depp, who’s also part of Universal’s Dark Universe as The Invisible Man. The movie is directed by Doug Liman, who worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow. And like Blow, it’s based on a true story.

Universal has released an official trailer for American Made, and you can read more about it and see the trailer and a poster below.

The Dark Tower Image

A movie adaptation of Stephen King‘s popular book series The Dark Tower has been set up and developed at multiple movie studios over the years before being eventually dropped and moving on to the next studio willing to give it a shot.

The latest studio to take on the ambitious adaptation is Sony, who seems to have a lot of faith that it could be one of their next big franchises after we found out back in April that the first movie was being fast tracked by the studio.

Now comes word that Sony has found the spot they want to release the first movie on, setting a release date of January 13, 2017.

The Dark Tower Image

Sony Pictures has found what they hope will become their next big franchise, and it’s one that other movie studios have tried to take on in the past before ultimately passing on. According to reports, Sony is teaming with Media Rights Capital to co-finance an adaptation of Stephen King‘s book series The Dark Tower, and they want to fast-track the production.

Universal was the first studio to try to adapt the books along with NBC Universal Television back in 2010 in what was going to be a trilogy of movies and a companion TV series with Ron Howard directing and Akiva Goldsman writing the first movie and first season of the show. It was so ambitious it was unbelievable, which is why it wasn’t all that shocking—just disappointing—when Universal dropped it. Then in 2012 Warner Brothers looked close to adapting the books, but they too decided it wouldn’t be worth it.

The Dark Tower Image

Much like the gunslinger’s from Stephen King‘s popular book series, The Dark Tower, the journey of a planned film and TV adaptation has been a long and difficult one.

It’s being reported that Warner Brothers has decided not to take on the property, which is being shopped around by Imagine Entertainment’s Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, despite the fact that even Russell Crowe was interested in starring. This comes five months after word that a deal with Warner Brothers was very close.

George Orwell’s ‘1984’ Being Adapted For The Screen Once Again

1984

By one of the most important and influential works of literature, George Orwell‘s seminal 1949 novel 1984 has been adapted for the stage and screen many times before. It’s legacy lives on in film, music, books, and comics. Now the book is getting the celluloid treatment once more.

Brian Grazer and Ron Howard‘s production company Imagine Entertainment is teaming with LBI Entertainment to mount a new film adaptation of 1984, and Shepard Fairley, the street artist responsible for the iconic “Hope” poster for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign who brought the 1984 project to the attention of Imagine and LBI, might be taking an important role in the production once all is said and done. Both production companies had been seeking the rights from Orwell’s estate and decided to team up on the project.

Ron Howard Finds New Home For Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’

The Dark Tower

It was one of the most ambitious plans ever concocted within the realms of entertainment: a trilogy of movies surrounding two seasons of a TV show, all based on author Stephen King‘s popular book series, The Dark Tower.

The project had Ron Howard set to direct and Akiva Goldsman set to write the first movie and first season of the show—which would fill in story details and bridge the first two movies—and Oscar winner Javier Bardem attached to star in all three movies and the first season of the TV show (the second season being a prequel that would require a younger actor).

Then it all came to a screeching halt when Universal decided they didn’t want to commit to the tremendous project. Now it looks like a brand new home has been found, but will it be the massive adaptation it once was, or will it be trimmed down?

Oscars

What a crazy story this has become.

Just yesterday it was reported that Brett Ratner had stepped down as a producer of the 84th annual Academy Awards ceremony after a gay slur and other poor speaking decisions rightfully saw him in boiling water. At the time it appeared that Eddie Murphy—Ratner’s choice to host the awards—would still be taking on the job, but the Academy was now on a desperate search for a replacement producer.
