While past reboots of Superman have put a greater focus on the Man of Steel’s life as reporter Clark Kent, newly hired DC Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis’ take on the character will be closely tied to the ideals of good journalism, the scribe explained during a panel at this year’s SXSW.

“I actually spent the day shadowing an Oregonian [journalist], just to show you how important the daily planet is to the stories we’ll be telling,” Bendis told Geeks Of Doom in response to a question about how the current climate of “fake news” and misinformation currently plaguing society might impact the storytelling. “On top of that, Journalism [is] under siege in my lifetime like it’s never been before.”

Marvel Comics Introduces 15 Year Old Black Girl As New Iron Man

Riri Williams

Comic books have had a huge impact on superhero movies. We really wouldn’t have the Marvel Cinematic Universe without them. But just as they have an impact on the big screen, they can also bring out social and progressive change. In recent years we’ve seen Marvel pull in to express diversity in gender and race. Sam Wilson became Captain America, and Jane Foster became Thor. Both were significant (and very welcomed) changes for the comics. But with comics, nothing is ever permanent. Characters who died can come back to life. Enemies are now allies. And revelations are sometimes controversial, like when Captain America and Hydra controversy, which was then resolved a few weeks later.

Now Marvel is taking another step forward in the right direction. This time with Iron Man. In a recent interview, Brian Michael Bendis said the mantle of the Iron Man name will be going to a 15-year-old black girl named Riri Williams. More on the story below.

How Creative Committee Dissolution Will Change Marvel Studios

The Avengers Post-Credits Scene

This week marked big changes for Marvel Studios. Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter lost his power over the superhero studio that has grossed over $7 billion dollars in seven years, leaving Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to report to Disney Head Of Live-Action Movies Alan Horn. Perlmutter will retain oversight on Marvel Television, but the restructuring meant that Kevin Feige would have more control over budgets, casting, etc when it comes to everything Marvel Studios. It’s not clear what this could mean for the overall shared universe with the films being connected with TV. But I’ve heard that there isn’t much of a connection between the two parties at all. But that is besides the point.

Now it appears that the shake-up isn’t over yet, and this could be a big one. There are two reports coming out saying that Marvel’s Creative Committee – their version of the Pixar Brain Trust – will now dissolve. More on this story below.

Donald Glover Will Finally Play Spider-Man (In Animated Form Of Course)

Donald Glover

Four years ago when Sony Pictures announced that its Spider-Man movie franchise would be rebooted following the exit of director Sam Raimi from the stalled development of a fourth feature starring Marvel Comics’ iconic wall-crawling superhero, actor, writer, and the rap star known as Childish Gambino, Donald Glover, threw his hat into the casting ring. The idea of the Community star assuming the role vacated by Tobey Maguire started out as the suggestion of a fan and eventually grew into a full-blown social media campaign with the hashtag “#donald4spiderman.” As far as we know, Glover didn’t even get an audition, and the role ultimately went to Andrew Garfield.

But now it looks as if Glover, who departed Community in the middle of its fifth season but has hinted at possibly returning to the show when it launches on Yahoo! later this year or next, will finally get his chance to play Spider-Man in an upcoming episode of the Disney XD animated series Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors. You can check out a newly-released image from the episode here below.
