NYCC 2017: Ash vs Evil Dead interview with Bruce Campbell

This past weekend, Ash vs Evil Dead took over this year’s New York Comic-Con. The Starz series proudly displayed their season 3 premiere date, 2/25/18, on a sign by their fan experience. That was set up outside the Javits Center the entire 4 days, allowing fans to walk through a replica set and create GIFs of them fighting deadites. On Saturday, they took to Hammerstein Ballroom, where stars Bruce Campbell, Dana DeLorenzo, Ray Santiago, Arielle Carver-O’Neill, and Lindsay Farris treated fans to a special sneak peek of the season 3 premiere and conducted a panel discussion and Q&A. They were back at Javits later in the day signing autographs and taking photos. The highlight for me was joining a press roundtable where we got to speak to the cast members of the series about their experiences on the upcoming season.

Check out the interview with Bruce Campbell here below.

NYCC 2017: Ash vs Evil Dead Panel

Saturday marked Day 3 for New York Comic-Con and was the dead I had circled. It was Ash vs Evil Dead Day! Having attended this panel the previous two years, I knew I was in for a treat with this crew. I arrived to the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC at 9:15am for the Ash vs Evil Dead panel, which was to start at 12:30pm, and the streets were already packed with fans, many in cosplay as Ash and others showing off their Evil Dead tattoos. The place had fans overflowing and by the time 12:30pm rolled around, the theater on 34th and 8th Avenue in Manhattan was near capacity. There had been much tension amongst fans of the Starz series, as the network at that point had failed to announce a premiere date for the third season, especially since seasons 1 & 2 both debuted around Halloween. Thankfully, crisis was averted, and right in time for NYCC, Starz announced a February 2018 airdate.

Star Bruce Campbell came out onto the stage first, dressed in a typically spiffy smoking jacket and thanked the fans for putting his kids through college. As a reward, we were given a full screening of the Season 3 premiere (see info about the episode at the end of this post).

Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3 art NYCC preview

FINALLY! We officially have a start date for Season 3 of Ash vs Evil Dead, which will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, and it is… Sunday, February 25, 2017 at 9PM. This comes after Starz had been treading water on announcing an airdate despite the season being completely wrapped months ago. Fan of the blood-soaked horror comedy were in panic mode, fearing the worst after the cable network failed to advertise it over the summer. In its first two seasons, Ash vs Evil Dead had debuted on or near Halloween. The announcement became official right in time for this year’s New York Comic-Con, where the crew from AvED will take over Hammerstein Ballroom for their panel on Saturday.

Ash vs Evil Dead S2 Blu-ray review

Ash vs Evil Dead
Season 2 Blu-Ray | DVD
Starring Bruce Campbell, Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo, Lucy Lawless, Ted Raimi
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release date: August 22, 2017

Ash vs Evil Dead will be entering its third season on the Starz network after debuting on Halloween, 2015. Last season, in its second year, the show avoided a sophomore slump by hitting the gas pedal hard on everything Evil Dead fans have come to expect: gore, one-liners, crazy chainsaw action, and… did I say… gore! You can get ready for Season 3 by picking up Season 2 on Blu Ray when it hits stores on Tuesday, August 22nd.

Interview With Dana DeLorenzo: Kelly From ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’

Ash vs Evil Dead Dana Delorenzo Kelly

Dana DeLorenzo plays Kelly Maxwell, Ash’s sarcastic, kickass sidekick on Starz’s Ash vs Evil Dead. The Ohio-born actress spent her time in Season 2, getting doused with gallons of blood, wrestling puppets, and wielding many a gun to dispose of deadites alongside Ash (Bruce Campbell) and Pablo (Ray Santiago). Kelly quickly showed she would NOT be a damsel in distress, becoming one of the most badass women on TV, fighting evil, and matching Campbell one-liner for one-liner.

I first spoke with DeLorenzo last summer before Season 2 debuted. That first phone interview took place in the quietest place I could find in Universal Studios Orlando while on a family vacation. Almost a year later, with Season 2 about to hit DVD/Blu-Ray and with Season 3 awaiting a release date, I got to interview the cast of AvED again. This time, closer to home but still out and about, I spoke with the DeLorenzo about her time and experience on Ash vs Evil Dead as we all ready for its third season.

Bruce Campbell Book Signing Cover

Last week, I got a chance to interview Bruce Campbell over the phone. Amongst our topics of conversation were his new memoir, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B-Movie Actor, a sequel to his 2002 book, If Chins Could Kill, and his upcoming 35-city book tour. Well, yesterday in New Jersey the tour commenced, and I was there with my son to meet the man, the chin, the legend, Bruce Campbell and get my copy of his book. The book signing took place at Bookends, located at 211 E. Ridgewood Ave, Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 2 Episode 8

Who is Bruce Campbell? Seriously, this was a question I had to answer for my mother! Bruce Campbell is the King of the B-Actors, a true modern renaissance man. His IMDb page lists over a hundred credits. He’s a producer and director, as well as the author of a New York Times bestseller. But to fans around the world, the answer to the above question is simple: he’s Ash Williams, the chainsaw-handed lothario from the Evil Dead franchise. He’s also my favorite actor, someone I proudly waited 4 hours to meet at a horror convention, and whom I got to interview last year while on vacation with my family inside of Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando. That interview occurred over the phone in the quietest place I could find in a theme park known for loud attractions. A year later, lightning struck a second time. I was privileged to get to interview Mr. Bruce Campbell this month, and had time to discuss his upcoming book, as well as upcoming Season 3 of the Starz hit series Ash vs Evil Dead.

Check out the interview here below.

Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th

Every fan of the Friday the 13th slasher series has their favorite Jason Voorhees. For many, myself included, it’s always been Kane Hodder.

A documentary about the man himself is on the way titled To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story. The doc tells Kane’s story, beginning with his difficult earlier years and leading to his landing the iconic role of Jason and other Hollywood roles. It also features interviews with Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), who faced off with Voorhees as Freddy Krueger in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason (though not with Hodder, sadly); Bruce Campbell, who many fans wanted to see join the Freddy and Jason fight in a sequel as Ash from the Evil Dead movies (a battle that did happen in comic book form); Adam Green, who directed Hodder as Victor Crowley in the Hatchet movies after he moved on from the Friday the 13th movies; and more.

Click on over to the other side to read more about the movie and check out a trailer.

Ash vs The Army of Darkness 00 Cover A Bradshaw banner

I think if you told Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell back in the late 70s that the uber low-budget horror film they were working on would still be relevant to pop culture four decades later, they would’ve probably turned the blood hose on you. But alas, the allure of Ashley J. Williams and is just too strong. Thirty-six years after the original Evil Dead film and 30 years after its classic sequel Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, and 25 years after its ridiculous horror-comedy third installment Army of Darkness, Ash is still trucking along killing deadites and fighting the Necronomicon on Starz network’s Ash vs Evil Dead, which was renewed for a third season. Since 2004, Dynamite Entertainment has been the home of the Ash vs. The Army of Darkness comic book series, so in honor of Army Of Darkness‘s silver anniversary, Dynamite is releasing a special all-new series starting with a #0 issue at the “S–Mart Special” price of only $0.99.

Still Groovy: Happy 30th Birthday To ‘Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn’

Evil Dead II

In the late 70s a group of friends got together in Morristown, TN, to create the low-budget gorefest to end all low-budget gorefests, The Evil Dead. Released in 1981, the film became a cult classic on home video and suddenly people knew the names of Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and of course Bruce Campbell. Six years later, on a budget ten times that of the original, the gang returned to the cabin in the woods and outdid themselves, crafting a half remake/half sequel that broke genre conventions and turned a one-off cult film into a now 5-decade-old franchise. The film was Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, and it was released in theaters 30 years ago this week. (It’s available now on Blu-ray.)
