Gerald's Game Netflix Carla Gugino Bruce Greenwood

Gerald’s Game
Based on the novel by Stephen King
Written by Jeff Howard and Mike Flanagan
Directed by Mike Flanagan
Starring Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Carel Struycken, Henry Thomas, Kate Siegel
Netflix
Released date: September 29, 2017

The new film Gerald’s Game marks the fourth Stephen King adaptation of 2017. This summer’s The Dark Tower was universally panned and flopped at the box office, yet It, conversely, is currently breaking box office records. Mr. Mercedes is a television series on a new platform, AT&T’s Audience Network, while Gerald’s Game landed on Netflix right before Halloween season officially begins. King’s novel Gerald’s Game was published in May 1992 and remained one of the author’s lesser-known works until Netflix optioned it. Directed by Mike Flanagan, one of horror’s up and coming auteurs, who co-wrote the screenplay with collaborator Jeff Howard, the results are a tour-de-force of filmmaking and acting that needs to be watched, albeit from between the fingers of your hand covering your face.

Star Trek Into Darkness Mini Ship

It’s pretty well-known that if J.J. Abrams is going to be attached to anything, we won’t know much about it until we see the actual film. It’s something of a standard practice for the filmmaker to keep the audiences interested throughout the production of his projects, and although Star Trek Into Darkness is just under two month away, we are still nowhere closer to finding out the details of Benedict Cumberbatch’s villainous character in the sequel. But some new pictures from Empire should be more than enough to whet our geek appetite until the film’s release.

Check out some of the new images below.

Flight movie posterFlight
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Nadine Velazquz, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood, Garcelle Beauvais and Justin Martin
Release Date: November 2, 2012

A mystical and unflagging perseverance allows airline pilot Captain Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) to crash-land a malfunctioning airline jet in an open field. It is evidenced that he is talented as a pilot. It is his calmness, though, that is most glaring and jarring. Remaining unshaken by the catastrophe he finds himself in, Whitaker is not self-deluding when he projects a demeanor that is reminiscent of a great Greek God. He constantly signals out demands that he needs from his crew, all of whom respond but with immense dread. But he remains calm, almost as if he knows he is not going to die. Each of the 102 people onboard his plane are all thrown into an uncontrolled panic as well. All of them are expecting death and six of them eventually will die. As the plane continues its descent, Whitaker becomes more resilient, more inspired and cockier, almost as if he is scoffing at imminent death.

Week of Geek: Star Trek banner

While touted as being “not your father’s Star Trek,” perhaps it was actually your mother’s, because this Mother’s Day weekend, JJ Abrams‘ prequel/reboot Star Trek reportedly earned $79.2 million at the domestic box office and has broken opening weekend IMAX records.

Paramount reports that due to strong attendance on Mother’s Day yesterday — which brought in $21 million — the film exceeded expectations by $3 million. The film went into early previews on Thursday night and played in 3,849 locations.

Meanwhile, 11% of the film’s total domestic gross came from its Star Trek: The IMAX Experience showings, which brought in $8.5 million from 138 IMAX screens. The limited IMAX run registered a per screen average of approximately $62,000 for the weekend, marking the highest grossing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday ever for an IMAX opening.
