It seems only fitting that I should make this comic my first review of 2019. I have been absent due to a new job that was far more than I could have anticipated but I wanted to make my comeback this week and start writing again. To that point, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 is the perfect vehicle for this as it is also a reboot of epic proportions!

I haven’t written anything about Buffy Summers since 2011, so I would definitely say it is about time. So without any further jabbering on my part, let me get to it!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Official Grimoire review

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Official Grimoire: A Magickal History of Sunnydale
Hardcover
By A.M. Robinson, Willow Rosenberg
Publisher: Insight Editions
Release Date: October 24, 2017

It’s been only five months since Buffy sacrificed herself to save the world. For five months we’ve wondered if the person who should be here, smiling and laughing and punning in a non-Buffybot way that actually makes sense, is instead suffering in an unimaginable hell dimension. Willow Rosenberg… October 2, 2001

Willow Rosenberg, the witchy brain of the Scooby gang, started chronicling her adventures from around the time Buffy went away, distraught over killing Angel (so beginning of season 3), to her last entry about the “spell to share the power of the chosen one” in season 7. Willow weaves her humor and language (I dub Buffy-speak) to give us her point of view of Oz, meeting Tara, The Gentlemen, Adam, and Tabula Rasa.

More below on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Official Grimoire: A Magickal History of Sunnydale by Willow Rosenberg aka A.M. Robinson.

Free Comic Book Day banner

Well, folks, it is that time again. It’s time for Free Comic Book Day! On May 6, 2017, comic and book shops across the known ‘verse will offer up exclusive comics to patrons for free. But it’s not just about dropping in and grabbing free loot and bailing. No, friends, this is the day you need to get out and show your appreciation for these stores. Because while the comics are free to you, they are not free to the shopkeepers. They buy those for distribution as a way of thanking us for our business. And what better way to pay it forward is there than to drop a few bucks in their businesses? I’ll leave it to you and your conscience, but know that what you do on FCBD will affect what the shops are able to do in the future. My local comic shop closed, certainly you would not want the same fate for yours, would you? Click here to find a participating comic shop near you!

But all the peer pressure aside, let us take a look at what the day will bring us in the way of comics. But remember, every shop may not have every title.

Buffy Angel Header

Buffy The Vampire Slayer began 20 years ago today, and besides being a completely iconic television series from Joss Whedon starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, who kicked ass and sometimes took names, it also contained some serious style, both of the time and timeless.

Amazon has tons of Buffy clothing and other items for the slayer in your life. Check out some of these below.

Children. This episode is all about children. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE; IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE VAMPIRE DIARIES EPISODE 7.6 “Best Served Cold,” READ NO FURTHER!

But yeah. Lily’s (Annie Wersching) children (of all varieties). Alaric’s (Matthew Davis) children. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Valerie’s (Elizabeth Blackmore) child. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) fantasy child. Caroline’s (Candice Accola King) fateful baby transference situation. More on that later.

As usual, an opening scene unfolds of three years from now. Children’s drawings are shown on Alaric’s fridge and Damon is grilling Alaric about the whereabouts of his fiancée. When we see a bloodied Caroline on the news broadcast saying she has “an urgent message for Stefan Salvatore,” it all clicks. Alaric is engaged to Caroline. WHAT?! This feels so beyond creepy to me. The writers are just messing with us!

Geeky Road commissioned art by Aviv Or

Recently, geek couple Danielle and Idan commissioned a geek-tacular piece of art from artist Aviv Or. The art is a take on The Beatles’ famous Abbey Road album cover and includes popular characters like Darth Vader, Buffy, and Sherlock, as well as familiar vehicles, props, and other pop culture references.

Click on the image here above for a larger view and see if you can spot all the cool references; here below is a photo of the piece hanging on Danielle and Idan’s living room wall.

Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: August 28, 2013
Cover Price: $2.99

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its seven-year run in 2003, fans of the Joss Whedon-created television series could (and did) take solace that a Buffy spin-off, Angel, was still on the air. Weekly forays to the Whedon-verse, however, ended when ended its abbreviated five-year run only a year later, Buffy/Angel fans contented themselves with syndicated reruns and DVDs. Whedon, of course, moved on, first to the short-lived Firefly (one season followed by a big-screen wrap up, Serenity) and Dollhouse several years later. Dollhouse only made it through two seasons on FOX. Despite his other projects, Buffy and Angel were never far from his mind.

Rather than attempting to bring Buffy back to network or cable television (an unlikely possibility given the passage of time, rights issues, and the availability of key cast members), Whedon decided to continue the series in comic-book form, first through Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8, a sprawling 40-issue run that ran from 2007 through 2011, and subsequently through the about-to-be-concluded Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9. Acting initially as co-writer for Buffy, but primarily as an executive producer or showrunner, Whedon handed over Buffy to newcomer Andrew Chambliss and a new spin-off series, Angel & Faith to longtime comic-book scribe Christos Gage and artist Rebekah Isaacs. Both series were meant to run in parallel, each with 25 issues plus two spin-offs, one devoted to Willow, Buffy’s best-friend and witch, and the other to Spike, the other vampire with a soul.
