Bungie's Destiny

Video games costing as much as a big budget Hollywood blockbuster is nothing new. Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V, for example is said to have cost around $265 million overall—the most expensive video game of all time. To put that in perspective, the estimated most expensive movie of all time is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which cost around $300 million. After that comes Tangled ($260 million), Spider-Man 3 ($258 million), and the rest of them. Movie budgets don’t usually include marketing cost and other things that would increase these numbers, but you get the idea.

So when it’s reported that a new video game, Destiny, will likely cost around $500 million when it’s all said and done, you understand the significance.

Bungie's Destiny Image

With this year’s E3 on the horizon, excitement for all of the new previews and reveals that will soon be arriving is growing. But as always, there’s plenty of pre-E3 goodness to take in and help build said excitement.

One of the games with a big presence at last year’s E3 convention looking to replicate that showing is Destiny, the new game from Halo creator Bungie.

A new seven-minute gameplay demo for the game has been released, and can be seen below. Oh, and if the voice of the AI assistant later on in the video sounds familiar, it’s because it’s none other than Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage (the voice at the beginning is thought to be Fringe‘s Lance Reddick).

Destiny GameImage

Another impressive gameplay demo shown off at E3 was for Destiny, the next endeavor for Halo creators Bungie, which is a first-person shooter that also has multiplayer elements.

The game is set 700 years in the future after the Golden Age—an age of peace, prosperity, technological advancement, and exploration that saw humans spreading out and colonizing various planets in the Solar System—before an apocalyptic event known as the Collapse destroyed almost everything, ended the Golden Age, and left known survivors only on Earth, where a giant sphere known as the Traveler (seen above)—which gave humans the power to expand into space centuries earlier—protects them.

In Destiny you’ll play as a Guardian of the City who must investigate and neutralize hostile alien races who have taken over some of the former colonies humans had established and once occupied, and are on their way to the City, where the surviving human race is now living.

You can check out a new trailer for the game and a co-op gameplay demo below now.

Halo 4

At the Penny Arcade Expo, a panel was held for the recently announced Halo 4, which is being developed by 343 Industries, the division established by Microsoft Game Studios to take up the reigns after Bungie concluded their work on the franchise with Halo: Reach.

Halo 4 is still a long, long way off, so 343 wasn’t able to talk a whole lot about the project, but they did have a couple of small things to share with eager fans, as well as some concept art from the early stages of the game’s production.

First of all, the game will begin a brand new trilogy of games, and 343 announced that this new trilogy has been named The Reclaimer Trilogy. And what is a “Reclaimer,” some of you might ask? Well…I haven’t the slightest clue. But the Halo Nation Wiki page does have a description, which you can see below along with the video of the various pieces of concept art shared.
