NYCHFF Tony Todd Candyman NYCHFF 2018: Candyman Actor Tony Todd Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Each year for over a decade and half, the New York City Horror Film Festival has handed out its Lifetime Achievement Award to an icon of horror cinema. The festival was created and organized by the late Michael J. Hein back in 2002 and the first two recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award were George A. Romero and Tom Savini.

Perhaps fittingly this year’s recipient was Tony Todd, who broke into the horror genre in Savini’s 1990 remake of Romero’s classic Night of the Living Dead. Two years later, he became a true horror legend when he played the titular hook-handed Candyman in Bernard Rose’s film based on the Clive Barker story The Forbidden. Since then Todd has used his massive 6’5″ frame, size-16 shoe, and deep voice to leave a lasting impression on the horror industry with appearances in the Final Destination franchise, Hatchet 1 & 2, Masters of Horror, and more. Saturday night at the Cinepolis Chelsea, The Candyman showed up to a sell-out crowd (with probably 50+ others standing in the aisle) to accept his award and partake in a Q&A.

“The pain, I can assure you, will be exquisite. As for our deaths, there is nothing to fear. Our names will be written on a thousand walls. Our crimes told and retold by our faithful believers. We shall die together in front of their very eyes and give them something to be haunted by. Come with me and be immortal.”

Based on author Clive Barker’s short story, The Forbidden, 1992’s Candyman is the definitive horror film of the 1990s. Written and directed by British filmmaker Bernard Rose (Immortal Beloved), the film stars Virginia Madsen (Dune, Sideways) as Helen Lyle, a Chicago graduate student who is researching urban legends. She stumbles upon a local legend, the Candyman (Tony Todd), a hook-wielding phantom who haunts the city’s notorious Cabrini-Green housing project.

‘Candyman’ Remake Could Be In The Works From Jordan Peele

Jordan Peele might produce Candyman remake

Seeing Bernard Rose’s 1992 film Candyman is an essential movie-viewing experience. And like many of the classic horror films that came out during that time, it has gotten some sort of remake treatment. But the interesting thing about Candyman was that it was a film ahead of its time. Not only was it a horror, it also addressed socioeconomic issues. A true rarity. So it should be no surprise that a remake could be in the works. Not only that, but it appears that Jordan Peele will produce and could be tapped to direct. More on the story below.

Matt Andrews Horror Icons Created With Cosmetics

Artist Matt Andrews cleverly and beautifully illustrated some of horror’s biggest icons using only cosmetics and beauty supplies. And if that task wasn’t intricate enough, the beauty product he used for each horror baddie was chosen for its ironic twist; for example; Nosferatu and Dracula were created with bronzer, The Wolfman with shaving cream, and The Creature From The Black Lagoon in baby powder. Each illustration has a little story to go with it explaining why those products were chosen.

The artwork is part of Andrews’ book, Cosmonstrography: Cosmetic Monster Photography, which is available via Blurb for $16.

Andrews posted 13 images online, which also includes killers like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers. Check out all 13 images here below.

‘Candyman’ Remake to Star a White Actor?

The Movie God   |  @   |

CandymanSTYD is reporting that they’ve learned that Sony is possibly thinking about giving their Candyman franchise a makeover and even that they might ponder throwing a white guy in the role of the Candyman this time.

Now, remake news like this used to be pretty shocking when we heard it, but at this point, it’s just the norm. Any kind of movie that has any kind of following or nostalgic potential is destined to be re-made in one way or another, so just deal with it and hold on tight to the original copies, lest they be lost to time.

Plus, it’s obvious that Hollywood hates Clive Barker and will do everything in their power to ruin and/or bury anything adapted from his works.
