The Thing

The remake of one of the most popular horror movies of all time, John Carpenter‘s The Thing, is moving forward, and it now has officially cast its two lead star in Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton.

Winstead will be playing a “Ph.D. candidate” who joins the Norwegian team after they discover an alien craft frozen solid in the ice. Edgerton will be playing a mercenary helicopter pilot, which would be the Kurt Russell role of the remake. The duo will eventually join up when a strange creature breaks free and starts killing people.

The movie is directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen, a long-time producer making his directorial debut. The screenplay is where some strong excitement can be discovered; it was written by Battlestar Galactica and Caprica god Ronald D. Moore, as well as Eric Heisserer, who wrote the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake script.

REMINDER: Unseen ‘Caprica’ Episodes Start Tonight!

Caprica

Because the pilot for Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica was released as a movie in what seems like a long, long time ago (Read: DVD Review: ‘Caprica’), it didn’t even feel like the show began last week. In case you missed it, the show did indeed start last week, and if you haven’t yet done so, you should find the pilot episode and watch it immediately.

Now that the pilot for this new adventure from BSG masterminds Ronald D. Moore and David Eick is done and over, that can only mean one thing: a wealth of brand new treasures in the creationism of Cylons as we know them! That’s right, tonight begins the first of the all-new episodes that we’ll see during the show’s maiden season voyage. It will take over from the epic ending point of the movie, and continue us on as Daniel Graystone digs deeper into his dark and revolutionary discovery and his daughter Zoe gets used to her new existence.

Click over to read the series’ synopsis and to check out a cool trailer for the post-pilot episodes of Caprica that we’re about to see, complete with appearances by Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s James Marsters and universally-popular funnyman, Patton Oswalt.

Watch Now: Pilot Episode For ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Prequel ‘Caprica’

Caprica

The pilot episode for Caprica, the new Battlestar Galactica prequel series, isn’t set to debut on SyFy until January 22, 2010; but this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to wait any longer. If you wish it, you can either go and buy the full movie (Read: DVD Review: ‘Caprica’), which was released a while back and will be edited down to become the pilot episode, OR you can stay here and watch the entire pilot episode right this very moment! This isn’t the exact cut that will be used for the debut, but it is close enough for those of you who just can’t wait any longer.

As you can read in the review linked above, I enjoyed the beginning of the series quite a lot. Watching it while still depressed over the loss of Galactica gave it a tough challenge to overcome, and while it’s highly unlikely that it will ever be anywhere near what BSG was, that doesn’t mean that it won’t be a great and compelling new show. And knowing producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, it will also have many connections to its predecessor for us to mine and ponder over.

Click on over for a full synopsis and to watch the entire Caprica pilot episode right now. Also, the image above is a new poster from the show which you can click to check out in full!

DVD Review: ‘Battlestar Galactica: The Plan’

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan DVDBattlestar Galactica: The Plan
Director: Edward James Olmos
Starring: Dean Stockwell, Rick Worthy, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Edward James Olmos, Michael Trucco, Kate Vernon, Callum Keith Rennie, Aaron Douglas, Michael Hogan, Rekha Sharma, Katee Sackhoff, James Callis
Universal Studios
Release Date: October 27, 2009

I don’t want to be human! I want to see gamma rays. I want to hear x-rays, and I want to smell dark matter. I want to reach out with something other than these prehensile paws and feel the solar wind of a supernova flowing over me. I’m a machine, and I could know much more.

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is the third prequel movie that has been made within the realms of the brilliant Ronald D. Moore and David Eick re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. The others were Razor and Caprica (which is more of a spinoff and setup for its own new series set to begin in 2010), and they offer us a deeper look into the many stories that we never saw as we journeyed through the wonderful five-season run. While Razor concentrated on another Battlestar ship and added many details to one of the stories we briefly saw in the series, The Plan is a unique and even odd kind of animal that takes us to many different points from the show.

To be completely honest, there’s not really a firm story here, but more of a completely alternative perspective to the intense and familiar events of the series. Do not think that that means that there is no story at all, though — there certainly is, and the more you think about the new things that you see within the film, the more you related them to the overall story, and this is where this movie really works well. The Plan actually plays out almost like the deleted scenes in your DVD special features section, which is kind of strange, but again, unique in its own little way.

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon Con 2009

James MarstersJames Marsters gave details about the role his character will play in the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica in a fan panel at Dragon*Con 2009.

“I saw the pilot. All I have to say is I was disturbed and had to shut it off,” Marsters said, after explaining that he can’t go into too much detail since the show is months away from airing.

He did add that playing a role with darker, most serious tone was very exciting.

James Marsters

Yesterday we found out that comedian Patton Oswalt had joined the cast of the Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica. Now comes word that another well-known name to the geek community will be joining the cast as well.

MTV News is reporting that Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel star James Marsters has officially joined the cast of the show, which is set to begin it’s first season (after the prequel movie, of course) in January of 2010. Marsters will play a character named Barnabus Greeley, a terrorist who’s having troubles distinguishing whether what he does is right, or horribly wrong.

Patton Oswalt Joins The Cast Of ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Prequel ‘Caprica’

Patton Oswalt

Patton Oswalt is hitting on all cylinders lately, starting as a hilarious stand-up comedian who also appeared in multiple movie and TV comedies. He then went on to voice the culinarily inclined rodent Remy the rat in Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille before showing off his dramatic chops in the upcoming Big Fan. Now, it’s being reported that Oswalt will add the science fiction genre to his resume, as the actor has joined the cast of Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica.

Though this will be a whole new genre for Oswalt, his character will still be more fitted to his roots. The actor will play Baxter Sarno, who is a humorous talk show host on the planet Caprica. At some point in the show, Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Amanda Graystone (Paula Malcomson) will appear on Baxter Sarno’s show — likely to talk about their daughter and the remarkable breakthrough that Graystone has had. No word on exactly how extensive the role will be, but we do know that it will be more than just one episode, which means we’ll probably see Mr. Oswalt on a lot of TVs and billboards in the background.

SDCC 09: ‘Caprica’ Has Easter Eggs For ‘BSG’ Fans

Caprica2Caprica, the prequel spin-off series of Battlestar Galactica, will have its share of “Easter eggs” and nods to BSG along the way but will ultimately stand on its own, according to creators Ronald D. Moore and David Eick at a San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Some of these “Easter eggs” would be using some of the same scenes found in Battlestar, such as the Opera House that appeared in President Rosalin’s visions of the final five Cylons.

“We’re not trying to give you Battlestar. I think it would be a shot of pain to do that,” Moore said, adding that the show would have its own roots.

“It is like Battlestar in the sense that the answers are never what you expect them to be… but there is more potential for mass appeal because this is Rome before the fall,” said Eick. “It’s much more like our modern world.”

Caprica DVDCaprica
Directed by Jeffrey Reiner
Starring Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Alessandra Toreson, Paula Malcomson, Polly Walker, Sina Najafi, Magda Apanowicz
Universal Studios Home Entertainment
Release Date: April 21, 2009

“Find those things in life that make you cry.
That make you feel.
Because they’re what make you human.”

What is it to follow one of the greatest shows ever created? That is the task given to Caprica, and it is not an easy one. The show, which is set to air its first season in 2010, is a prequel/spin-off of the now-completed Ronald D. Moore and David Eick brilliance that was Battlestar Galactica. But to ease the waiting period just a little itty bit, the first episode — in the form of a two-hour-ish long movie — has been released on DVD, and I have the ultimate geek honor of reviewing it.

Caprica takes place 58 years before the BSG storyline picks up. It’s much simpler, much more similar to our own time, aside from some sweet technologies (computerized tennis courts with robo-refs? Let’s get on that one, scientists!). The story follows two men, Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Joseph Adama (Esai Morales), who meet in the wake of severe tragedy involving their families. Daniel, being a super-genius who is working on artificial robot life forms for the military to use, discovers that his daughter Zoe (Alessandra Toreson) was actually a genius herself before the tragedy, and she developed an amazing replication program. Daniel, thinking that he’s found a way to bring back his and Joseph’s family, presents the idea to him. Joseph is appalled by the idea at first, but the offer is too tempting to refuse, so he finds himself in a battle with himself trying to decide what is right, and where the line is drawn. Ultimately, Daniel Graystone’s work lays the blueprint for Cybernetic Lifeform Nodes, or as we know them: Cylons.

DVD Preview: ‘Battlestar Galactica’ Prequel ‘Caprica’

A while back it was announced that we were still in for a new Battlestar Galactica prequel, called Caprica. Soon after that, we were made aware that Caprica was not a movie, but that it would be an entire season of the prequel show. We rejoiced.

Now I may be the only one who wasn’t aware of this, but we’re actually getting BOTH. On April 21, 2009, Caprica the movie prequel will be released on DVD, and then later on this summer, production on the TV series will begin! The only thing better than this would be news that they changed their mind about ending BSG.

This format is brilliant, as we the fans will be able to catch the movie and shout our thoughts and opinions out on this glorious Internet, where the show’s producers will then be able to take everything into consideration before moving forward on the series.

Now that we can take solace in the fact that we’ll be getting some Caprica and the other spin-off The Plan soon — allow us to share some information on the DVD along with some clips. Who doesn’t adore a good clip?
