Jessica Jones

Netflix has dropped the newest trailer for season 2 of Jessica Jones. Following the events of season one and the Defenders miniseries, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is searching for her lost past. And she discovers that she isn’t the only one whose tragic story gave her superpowers.

After the end of season 1, Jessica thought she could find closure in killing Kilgrave (David Tennant), the mind-controlling superhuman who tormented the title character nearly all of her life. However, she is unable to put her past behind as she struggles to overcome the nightmares of her past. The nightmares that gave her powers after her family was killed in a car accident. To make matters worse, a new detective agency wants to absorb Alias Investigations.

The Defenders

For those who haven’t watched any of Netflix’s solo Marvel outings, let’s do a little roll call. There’s “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen,” aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox). After that it’s the smart-ass detective otherwise known as Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), the righteous ex-con. Then there’s the “Hero of Harlem,” or who we know as Luke Cage (Mike Colter). Finally, there’s the kid with a glowing fist aka Iron Fist (Finn Jones). These otherwise heroes of New York City have been defending the streets from one threat or another, and now after two years of build up, the pay off is finally coming to Netflix this summer in The Defenders.

The first trailer for the Marvel superhero ensemble has finally arrived. Together with the help of some friends like Misty Knight (Simone Missick), Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), and Stick (Scott Glenn), they will protect their streets from the mysterious Hand and a new villain played by Sigourney Weaver. Check out the trailer below.

Krysten Ritter in Jessica Jones

With the holidays in the United States, there is a tradition of finishing a big meal and transitioning into some deep couch sitting as you watch some football. As of November 20th, though, you also had the option of watching some finely crafted Marvel Entertainment in the form of Marvel’s Jessica Jones on Netflix. While you feasted on turkey, you could then binge on this darker and more noir-esque offering of a comic book-based show. If nothing else, you could watch David Tennant give one of the creepiest and nastiest villains in the Marvel universe a life on screen (seriously, it’s magnificent).

After binge-watching the show myself over the past week, I can honestly say that Jessica Jones, while not as polished as its predecessor, Marvel’s Daredevil, it is definitely worth some deep couch-sitting time.

TV Review: Marvel’s Jessica Jones 1.1 “AKA Ladies Night”

Marvel Jessica Jones Netflix series Krysten Ritter

Marvel’s Jessica Jones
Episode 1.1 “AKA Ladies Night”
Created by Melissa Rosenberg
Starring Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Rachael Taylor, Carrie-Anne Moss, David Tennant
Netflix
Premiere date: November 20, 2015

Marvel’s Jessica Jones starts off with a dramatic bang. Taking place in the same dark Manhattan of fellow Netflix seriesDaredevil that contrasts so heavily with the New York that Iron Man and the Avengers saved just a little while ago, the grit and overt noir feels more like something out of Christopher Nolan’s depiction of The Dark Knight. The difference here is that Ra’as Al Ghul’s Detective is 5’9”, female, and doesn’t need a mask to intimidate the baddies.

The first episode, “AKA Ladies Night,” does some interesting things when it comes to its depiction of women. Jessica Jones takes place in a woman’s world. The first ten minutes of the show is bereft of male-speaking roles. The next five introduces a father trying in vain to cope with his daughter’s missing status by attempting to fix a door, while his wife, deals with the business. The next male character you meet is likewise neutered: he’s a video artist. Number 3 is a pathetically portrayed Alpha Male — contrast that with the title super heroine in Krysten Ritter, a woman running the board room in Carrie-Anne Moss top-rate lawyer, and the missing female’s mother, who’s clearly running things at home. This is a wholly different paradigm for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that started off with the male chauvinist Tony Stark in Iron Man less than a decade ago. As comic book content goes, it’s a whole new bag.

Marvel's Jessica Jones

With the premiere date for Marvel’s Jessica Jones just around the corner, Netflix and Marvel are giving us one last peek into the complicated and dark world of the heroine turned private investigator. Also, David Tennant‘s Kilgrave is already making a strong case to be the best Marvel villain in the MCU, hands down.

Check out the final trailer (they’re calling it the final trailer anyways) for Jessica Jones down below. It’s heavy on the presence of Luke Cage, on Jessica’s alcohol consumption, and of course the twisted evil that is Kilgrave.
