Casanova, The Complete Edition Volume 3: Avaritia reviewCasanova, The Complete Edition Volume 3: Avaritia
Written by Matt Fraction
Art and Cover by Gabriel Bá
Colors by Cris Petter
Letters by Dustin Harbin
Image Comics
Release Date: April 14, 2015
Cover Price: $29.99

When we first see Casanova Quinn in the open pages of Avaritia, he’s like we’ve never seen him before: sad, angry, hating his job after years of loving it. After the events of Gula, our favorite E.M.P.I.R.E. agent is destroying alternate realities in an attempt to stop his nemesis, Newman Xeno, from ever existing. But it’s the more subtle thing that continues to blow me away every time I revisit this story: when we first see Casanova — he has Xs for eyes.

It’s one of many signals that this arc of Casanova will be unlike we’ve seen before.

The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Go Patriots!” Henchman 21 and “What trailers are they showing?” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of January 28, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh sweet, sweet nectar. These are the weeks that make me love comics oh so much. As I was putting together this list each week, I usually start with a general idea of what books I want to talk about and how many I’ll be writing about on any given week. This week I thought I knew what I was going to write about, but then new books jumped off the release list and demanded that I recommend them to you, and the list just kept getting bigger. There is just such a metric crap load of great books coming out this week that I just can’t wait to tell you about so let’s just get to it and an over-sized The GoD List!

The GoD List Banner

Each and every week, I, “Too Cold!” Henchman 21 and “Way Too Cold!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible… theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of November 19, 2014. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

It’s a special all Image hardcover edition because apparently they felt the need to drop three awesome collections out on the same week. Which I guess is cool because it’s not like I need money going into the Christmas season. But, I suppose I was just going to spend that money on gallons and gallons of egg nog and I may as well spend it on awesome comics. Which is exactly what we suggest you do on The GoD List!

Digital Comics Deal: Icon 20% Off Sale

Icon Sale

Icon, the creator-owned subsidiary of publisher Marvel Comics, has possibly one of the best stables of creators and comic book titles in their arsenal, and care of Comixology, you can catch up on titles like Criminal, Powers, Casanova, and more with a cool 20 percent off sale.

Yes, that’s right! You’ve seen the praise for Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips‘ creator-owned work on this site before, and that’s with good reason, as Criminal and Incognito are two of the most innovative works in their fields. Both comics completely suck you in to their gritty, crime-ridden world setting and tell a story that is simply unforgettable. I even suggested that you catch up on Criminal on this past week’s GoD List, so if you for some reason weren’t listening to me, here’s your perfect opportunity. There’s not a single issue of Criminal or Incognito for over the price of $1.50. What are you waiting for?

ISSUES

Infinite Vacation 2The Infinite Vacation #2 (Image Comics – $3.50) – When the first issue of Infinite Vacation came out in January, I was elated with how good the comic was. Nick Spencer continued his reign over comics with another incredibly exciting creator-owned book published by Image. The concept behind the book is that a mobile app gives people the ability to travel throughout the multiverse. The concept of a multiverse is used in many different comics and publishers where there are separate universes with the same characters dealing with different circumstances. But very rarely has the concept of the multiverse been applied to non-superhero characters, but Infinite Vacation does just that. The series has unfortunately met a strong delay with the second issue coming out in April after the first issue came out in January, but the first issue sat with me so strongly, that I’m still excited about this follow-up. So, here’s hoping that the second keeps and amps up the excitement.

C2E2 2010: ‘Casanova’ Returns This July Through Marvel’s Icon Comics

Geeks of Doom Invades C2E2 2010

2010-04-20-casanovaI expected an announcement about the return of Matt Fraction’s crazy super-spy epic Casanova to occur during the Image Comics panel on Saturday at C2E2. Fraction has mentioned on his twitter account that he has been working on new scripts for the series, which has not been seen since the end of Volume 2 was released in 2008. Little did I realize that the series had actually moved from Image to Marvel’s creator-owned Icon line and that the announcement would happen during Marvel’s Cup of Joe panel.

Starting in July, readers will be able to catch up with the series, as the first 14 issues will be re-released in full color (the series was originally released in a green/white and blue/white color palette). According to Fraction’s blog, the series will also be repackaged.

The first two volumes will be released in eight single issues. The first issue will contain the original issue as well as a new story drawn by Fabio Moon. From there, each Icon issue will contain two issues that were released by Image, as well as new bonus material, until the eighth issue, which will contain what was originally issue #14, as well as another new story that will lead into Volume 3. Each issue will be 32 pages and cost $3.99.

Conversations with GoD: Matt Fraction

Kelly Sue via FlickrNext in a string of interviews that are either finished, underway, or soon to be started, is Marvel’s very own, but not exclusive, Matt Fraction. Author of the popular Image comic book Casanova, and currently also writing The Uncanny X-Men and Invincible Iron Man for Marvel, Matt Fraction is a favorite among many Marvel fans. Make sure you check out his website for regular updates, and a bit of Matt Fraction randomness.

And now, on with the show.

Geeks of Doom: For the comic newbie, tell us who you are.

Matt Fraction: My name is Matt Fritchman. I write under the name “Matt Fraction.” Long, uninteresting story. I write the book Casanova, at Image Comics. I write Invincible Iron Man and The Uncanny X-Men, and I co-write Punisher War Journal with Rick Remender at Marvel Comics.

GoD: When you go home at night, what or who do you go home too? Wife or dogs?

MF: I work from home, alongside my wife Kelly Sue DeConnick, a comic writer in her own right, my son, two dogs and two cats.

GoD: Was being a comic writer a childhood dream? If not, what got you in to it?
