Red Riding HoodBy Comtesse de Bussy

Red Riding Hood
Directed by Catherine Hardwicke
Starring Amanda Seyfried, Michael Shanks, Gary Oldman
Release date: March 11, 2011

It seems that updating classics and age-old stories has become something of a fad. Only a few years ago the film Brothers Grimm was released, and three more films, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Brothers Grimm: Snow White, are in the works. Not to mention all of the Disney cartoons that transform the original, often dark material into a colorful, sugar-coated, happy-ending cartoon with music whose soundtracks will sell hundreds of copies. Such movies rarely retain the core of the story they tell, and instead become an excuse for an entirely different kind of tale, one that takes away from the screenwriters the necessity of coming up with an entirely original plot, characters, and setting. This seems to be the case with Red Riding Hood, a film in which the story of a young girl and a wolf are used as an excuse to create a Twilight-esque tale in which a beautiful young woman must choose between two men. And the real shame is that this could have been a good movie, but instead got stuck with a terrible plot and an atrociously ridiculous setting.

Official ‘Twilight’ Convention Underway In NJ – We Are There [Kinda]

The Official Twilight Convention is underway in Parsippany, NJ, this weekend and long-time Friend of Doom and Twilight fanatic, the lovely CrueChik is on the scene for Geeks of Doom.

The convention kicked off yesterday with guests like Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke and stars Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) and Edi Gathegi (the vampire Laurent) and members of the Wolf Pack from New Moon on hand for Q&A panels and autograph sessions.

Our reporter has called in a few times to let us know the happenings at the Con and sent the image here at right (click for larger, full view), which is a sign at the entrance to the Con (there’s another sign with an arrow pointing the other way for ‘Werewolves’ — CrueChik is on Team Edward, which is why we have such a bias pic. UPDATE: She’s not that bias – here’s the other pic). But, I think she’s living it up so much that she hasn’t had much time to write in her official report (we don’t blame her — we told her to party hardy!).

Since CrueChik is a Con newbie, she didn’t know about having to get everyone ‘early’ (like those of us learned at Comic-Con), so she wasn’t able to get into the Catherine Hardwicke Q&A (though, she was able to get into the autograph/photo session). MTV was there and noted that the Twilight director said her original vision for Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen was for the vampire to have “long, romantic hair.” They even went so far as to have Pattinson sit for 8 hours for hair extensions, but in the end, the actor said “No” to his new locks.

Instant Damage? ‘Twilight’ Director Catherine Hardwicke To Direct Gothic ‘Little Red Riding Hood’

Red Riding Hood

Remember that news recently about a Gothic-style makeover of the story of Little Red Riding Hood (Read: Tale Of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ Set For A Dark Re-Telling)? Remember how it kind of had a cool vibe to it, like when we find out that Tim Burton is remaking something? Well, it appears that the movie may not be exactly what we might have hoped it would be.

It’s being reported that ousted Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been signed to helm this Red Riding Hood movie. New information about the project sets its title as The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, which will be the previously-mentioned Gothic-style re-envisioning that has some type of love triangle at the center of its story. Considering there’s only a few traditional characters that are typically used, this love triangle is a tad unsettling to think about.

‘Twilight’ Director Catherine Hardwicke Removed From Sequel ‘New Moon’
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

TwilightIn an interesting and pretty surprising move, Summit Entertainment has announced that they will be replacing Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke with a new director for the movie’s sequel, New Moon.

At first, reports via Nikki Finke said that Hardwicke was ‘difficult’ and ‘irrational’ during filming, which lead to idea of a replacement, but these reports have since been shot down as false and it looks like the problem is just your regular conflict of schedule and that it was in fact a mutual decision.

Both the director and studio released statements in regard to the situation.

Catherine Hardwicke:

I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON. Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel — it is a great story.

Twilight
Directed by Catherine Hardwicke
Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Cam Gigandet, Taylor Lautner
Rated PG-13
Release Date: November 21, 2008

Imagine leaving your sunny and lively hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, to go live in the cold, rainy and dull Forks, Washington. Imagine leaving your frantic mother, to go live with your relaxed father. These extreme changes are what Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) must endure in Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight.

The movie opens up as Bella is leaving Phoenix, and adjusting to her new surroundings. She soon finds herself at school and is captivated by the presence of a group of stunning schoolmates, who are the “foster children” of Doctor Cullen (Peter Facinelli) and his wife. Bella is most interested in the charming Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who appears to be hiding a secret. At first, Edward avoids Bella at all costs, until he saves her from an almost fatal car accident. This is the start of a new relationship between Edward and Bella, and she soon finds out that Edward, and the rest of his family, are vampires; but, contrary to stereotypical vampires that feed on humans, the Cullens have taken on a “vegetarian” diet, feeding on animals instead of humans. Edward also explains to her that he was avoiding her because he thirsted for her blood.

Twilight
Directed by Catherine Hardwicke
Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Cam Gigandet, Taylor Lautner
Rated PG-13
Release date: November 21, 2008

Catherine Hardwicke‘s Twilight is a love letter as well as a wink and a nod to all the diehard fans of the novel by Stephenie Meyer on which it is based. There’s no doubt that Meyer’s book sparked a pop culture phenomenon the likes of Harry Potter, but where the Potter film adaptations were big-budget huge effects fantasy efforts that are fun for the whole family, Hardwicke’s movie is really a small-time indie drama with a touch of supernatural aimed straight at the heart of young girls.

The film opens with Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) leaving her home in sunny Phoenix to go live with her father in the dreary town of Forks, Washington. Bella’s voiceover explains that she’s relocating so that her mom can go on the road with her new husband, a minor league baseball player.

Once in Forks, the shy Bella does make some friends, but also seems to have earned the disdain of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a handsome yet mysterious boy who only socializes with his equally mysterious foster siblings. Bella finds herself attracted to her unnaturally pale classmate, even though he is openly repelled by her. She can’t understand what his issue is with her, until one day he saves her from a car accident and reveals his true nature as a vampire, and that what Bella thought was disgust was actually lust — for her and her blood.

Updated ‘Twilight’ Poster + Details On The Film’s Reshoots

Updated 'Twilight' PosterTwo weeks ago, we reported that Summit Entertainment had moved up the release date for Twilight to November 21, 2008, from its original December 12th date (see ‘Twilight’ Moved to November 2008!).

Now, Summit has updated the movie poster to reflect the November date change. Click on the image here at right for the full version of the updated poster.

In other Twilight news, EW reports that director Catherine Hardwicke is currently doing reshoots for the film. Typically, “reshoot” spells disaster for a soon-to-released movie, but that’s not the case for Twilight, which faced a lot of problems due to the weather during its original 44-day production in Oregon. The issue with the weather is something that Hardwicke has mentioned numerous times in interviews and behind-the-scenes clips.
