Kim Fowley

Legendary Runaways producer and Los Angeles rock legend Kim Fowley died today after a long battle with cancer, although no official cause of death has been released at this time, according to Rolling Stone. He was 75.

The son of actors, the Los Angeles, CA-born Fowley began his career in the music business in 1959 and spent the 1960s working with acts such as Paul Revere and the Raiders and Gene Vincent. His career as a solo artist yielded a minor hit when his third LP, 1968’s Outrageous, broke Billboard’s Top 200. Many credited Fowley with the advent of the raised lighter concert salute after he encouraged the crowd to do it while MCing John Lennon’s Toronto Rock and Roll Revival performance in 1969.

Back in February, we told you about the Danzig 25th Anniversary Tour with special guest Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Glenn Danzig’s former Misfits bandmate.

Well, the tour, which is in full force, made a pitstop in Los Angeles, CA, last month for a “send-off” show at the Universal Gibson Amphitheatre, which closed its doors on September 6th, 2013 to make way for the new The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood.

At the Gibson show, Runaways singer Cherie Currie, who’s currently on a solo tour, joined the band on stage for a duet with Glenn Danzig on “Some Velvet Morning,” a cover of the Lee Hazlewood/Nancy Sinatra song. You can watch a video of the performance here below; there’s also an embed of the studio version of their cover, which will be on Danzig’s planned covers album.

The Runaways 1976 debut album

Right now, The Runaways, the debut album from the band The Runaways, is on sale in MP3 format for only $2.99.

Released in 1976, The Runaways is the debut album from the 1970’s all-girl rock band featuring Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Cherie Currie, who were teenagers at the time – all the girls were around 16 at the time and their ages were even listed on the album’s back cover. The 10-track album features the band’s breakout hit “Cherry Bomb,” as well as “You Drive Me Wild,” “American Nights,” “Thunder,” and a cover of Lou Reed’s “Rock & Roll.”

All this for only $3!!! The Runaways is one of my favorite bands of all time and this album was my introduction to them as a little girl who wanted to play rock music. HIGHLY recommend.

Browse all 100 albums on sale this month for only $5 each and those for $2.99 and up as well as several albums on sale for $0-$5 each and select live albums on sale for $5.99 each.

Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway

As part of Amazon’s monthly $3.99 or Less ebook deals, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway, The Runaways singer Cherie Currie‘s autobiography, is available for the Kindle for only $2.99.

Neon Angel is what The Runaways movie starring Kristen Stewart (as Joan Jett) and Dakota Fanning (as Currie) was based on. In the book, Currie talks about her upbringing and then goes into detail about her time with The Runaways, which was an all-girl teenage rock band in the 1970s and if you saw the movie, you see just how hard these young girls had it and what they did for rock and roll. Currie’s original version of the autobiography had been out of print since the 1990s, but thanks to HarperCollins/It Books, the book has been repackaged and reprinted.

If you’d like a physical copy of the book, the Hardcover is $17.97, while the paperback is $10.87.
