If BAADASSSSS! Controlled The Universe: The Unfinished 1976 Version Of ‘The Expendables’

The Expendables 2

Hello there, fellow cultural mutants. Humble writer BAADASSSSS! is here to announce the launch of a special new regular column for Geeks of Doom, “If BAADASSSSS! Controlled The Universe.” I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of alternate timelines where certain events had radically different outcomes than the ones we know of, outcomes that forever altered the course of human history. Many books and articles have been written about the greatest movies that were never made. Most of those aborted features would have been dreams made reality for movie fans the world over were they made. With that in mind I will devote each edition of “If BAADASSSSS! Controlled The Universe” to the construction of my own personal alternate history of cinema where the movies that we beat ourselves over the head with our own shoes wondering how come they were never made did in fact make it to the big screen, and each time the results were glorious.

For this inaugural edition I take a look at The Expendables, but not the one we all know and mostly love. The all-star 2010 action epic headlined by Sylvester Stallone and a small army of the screen’s greatest ass-kicking manly men defied the odds by becoming a global box office sensation and giving rise to a sequel set to open this Friday that looks even better than the original. But let us consider for a moment what would The Expendables have looked like if it was made with an entirely different cast in a much different time. In this alternate reality the Stallone movie is actually a unacknowledged remake of a star-studded spectacular of bullets, bombs, and babes from the late 1970s that unfortunately remained unfinished and unreleased. Now imagine that the footage from the production of the original Expendables that survived had recently surfaced and we were about to get a first hand look into a movie that had the potential to be one of the greatest action films ever made.

Nicolas Cage In For ‘The Expendables 3’; Eastwood, Snipes & Ford In Talks

Nicolas Cage Reportedly Cast For The Expendables 3

The Expendables 2 raised the bar by adding more classic action stars (Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme) to the film series, and as the saying goes, nothing really beats the classics. So for The Expendables 3, fans shouldn’t be surprised to see even more classic action superstars punch, kick, fight, and bomb their way through enemy forces.

Obviously with a sequel such as this one, the question of who would you like to see be added to the next installment will come up and producer Avi Lerner did throw out a couple of names that should excite fans of The Expendables franchise. Among the stars the producer mentioned were Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, and Clint Eastwood. Quite a collection of names which should make for a very exciting sequel. In fact, Cage is reportedly signed on for the third film, while the other three are still in negotiations.

Blu-ray Review: J. Edgar

J. Edgar Blu-ray

J. Edgar
Blu-ray l DVD
DIRECTOR: Clint Eastwood
WRITER: Dustin Lance Black
STARRING: Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench
Warner Brothers
RELEASE DATE: February 21, 2012

When a historical drama directed by the one and only Clint Eastwood (who also produced and created the original score) starring Leonardo DiCaprio comes along, it fits quite perfectly into what has come to be known as “Oscar Bait”: a movie that looks made specifically for awards season.

But when the Academy Award nominees were announced back in January, not only did J. Edgar get passed over for the biggest category, Best Picture, but it was passed over for all categories. No nod for DiCaprio’s performance. Nothing for Eastwood’s directing or music. Not even a nomination for makeup.

So why was it that J. Edgar went with few award nominations and no Oscar nods whatsoever? Was it that the movie was just not so great, or was it snubbed? Well…that’s simply a matter of opinion, friends, and I shall give you mine.

J. Edgar movie posterJ. Edgar
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench
Release Date: November 11, 2011

Submerged in sloppy sentiment, J. Edgar, Clint Eastwood‘s latest directorial effort, is unrelieved of its melodramatic characteristics, growing sappier as the film approaches its conclusion. Instead of getting an aggressively bold portrait of J. Edgar Hoover, a man undoubtedly built into the firmament of American history, we get a dreary and almost entirely lifeless (save for Leonardo DiCaprio‘s vigorous performance as Hoover) film that teeters on a precipitous cliff until it finally crumbles and dissolves into a pool of cheap melodrama.

Mr. Eastwood usually navigates keenly the narrow road that divides drama from melodrama. We have been accustomed, to the point of being spoiled, to witness him effortlessly depict his craft in top form in Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby, two films that could have easily mingled with cheap sappiness but instead were rescued by assured direction and consistently intelligent scripts.

Must See: 24 Paintings Of Celebrities As Russian Generals

Celebrity Russian Generals Banner

At one time or another, you’ve probably seen one of the paintings that various people in a position of power have had commissioned of themselves. One particularly notable portrait out there is that of the Russian general, which someone has taken to an extremely entertaining new level.

George Dawe, an English portrait artist who has painted 329 portraits of Russian generals, uses a digital copy of his work as a basis to add his friends, family, and some celebrities into the paintings using Photoshop.

So far he’s done a bunch of celebrities, and most of them look amazing. If we didn’t know who these people were, you wouldn’t think twice about whether most of them were a legit Russian general or not. Some look a little off such as Sean Connery, for example, who looks as though he’s just passed gas in a room full of people, and is pleased that none of them can figure out who it was.
