Eddie Murphy Coming To America

Paramount Pictures is moving forward with plans for Coming To America 2 with star Eddie Murphy returning to his role as Akeem, with Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) set to direct.

Deadline reports that Murphy, who will also serve as producer, was “eager to work” again with Brewer, who directed him last year in the Netflix film Dolemite Is My Name, and that Kenya Barris, creator of the hit ABC TV series Black-ish, will rewrite a script by Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, who were the original film’s screenwriters.

With films like Black Snake Moan and Hustle & Flow to his name, director Craig Brewer seems like the perfect filmmaker to take on a remake of Footloose, right?

Well, how odd that may in fact sound, come October 14, 2011, we’ll be getting a chance to see just what Brewer has to offer thanks to his quite talked about remake. Paramount Pictures has released a press release officially revealing the cast for their remake of the 1984 Kevin Bacon film, Footloose.

The lead character Ren McCormack was awarded to Kenny Wormald, a relatively new actor, best known for his dancing abilities. Wormald has appeared as a dancer in movies like You Got Served and Clerks II, and also was a part of the movie Center Stage: Turn It Up. He joins popular Dancing with the Stars performer Julianne Hough, who will step into Lori Singer’s role of Ariel Moore. Hough is also new to the acting game, but has a new movie called Burlesque coming up and even appeared in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, giving her a little geek cred.

-Your movie had to be distributed: Every once in a while, a feature makes the film festival rounds without actually getting picked up and distributed. If your second film was released in theaters in America, that’s the one I’m counting.

-No Donnie Darko: That movie is actually an episode of Quantum Leap with shitty emo “Kill Yourself” music packed in. Sorry, kids.

So now then… The Ten Best Directorial Debuts of the Decade
