‘The Daily Show’ Revisits The Unforgivable ‘Saving Private Ryan’ & ‘Goodfellas’ Oscar Screwjobs

While discussing the London riots on The Daily Show, host Jon Stewart and senior European correspondent John Oliver took a bit of a detour.

After mentioning how horrible the riots are and how bad European wars are in general, Oliver notes that some good has come of them as well, such as the various movies about them including Saving Private Ryan.

After declaring Ryan a Best Picture Oscar winner, Stewart corrects Oliver and informs him that Shakespeare In Love was in fact the winner that year. This hilariously sets off the two on a mini–tirade about the atrocity that not only the Saving Private Ryan upset was, but also the loss of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas to Kevin Costner’s Dances With Wolves.

Oscar Winning Composer John Barry Dies At Age 77

Hollywood has lost another great; legendary film composer John Barry has passed away at the age of 77. His family confirmed that Barry died Sunday in New York after suffering a heart attack.

Barry crafted many brilliant musical scores over the years, but none perhaps more memorable than his contributions to the world of James Bond. The composer worked on eleven different Bond movies, and there’s no denying that the music he brought to the franchise will live on for eternity.

Apart from his highly recognized work with James Bond, Barry had many other credits to his name — over 100 movies, to be more specific. Over the course of his career he was nominated for seven Academy Awards, won five of them for his work on movies like Born Free, The Lion in Winter, Out of Africa, and Dances With Wolves.

You can find a musical tribute to the great John Barry by continuing on below.

pocahontas avatar scriptThose of us who’ve seen Avatar — and judging by its over $1 billion box office earnings, I’d say that’s most of us — probably felt like you’ve heard this story before…

SPOILER

A white soldier spends time with and learns the ways of a tribal people (people in danger of losing their lands and life to enterprising white colonists), falls in love with the leader’s daughter, eventually becomes a trusted honorary member of said tribe, sees the error of the white man’s ways, leads his new clan into battle.

/SPOILER

Yes, it does sound a lot like Dances With Wolves, even James Cameron agreed.

A similar comparison has been to Disney’s Pocahontas — check out the video mash-up here below of the Avatar trailer with the dialogue of Pocahontas (especially when the singing kicks in). Not convinced? Then read an except from the Pocahontas script someone cleverly marked up with Avatar references.

I’ll give Avatar a little more credit than to just call it a Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves in Ferngully land rip-off, considering the amount of detail that went into creating Avatar‘s world of Pandora and of course, the impressive special effects and CGI work. But as far as story goes, we’ve heard this one before for sure… but that’s ok, it’s a good story to tell.
